Oh, these dee-vee-dees are amazing, especially A Christmas Carol! I would never have believed that plays and the like could have been captured in such a way. The actors really are very talented... though I do wonder about some things. I watched one in which some people were rather grievously wounded, and I can't quite imagine how they managed it ( Read more... )

There are movies where I am from, but they are nothing like the ones I have seen on the ship.

[Of course, she never saw a movie before back home]

In older films, a combination of makeup, models made to look like the actors, and copious amounts of fake blood. In newer ones, computer-generated imagery.

[Hey, good going, Major! Almost all of that was understandable.]

Computer-generated imagery... Are computers like televisions, then?

[Hmm. How to find the proper analogy?]

A computer is a machine that can perform certain tasks much faster than a person.

A person can paint a picture so perfect you might mistake it for a photograph--a daguerreotype?--but it takes them a very long time. If you program a computer to perform the same task, it will do so very, very quickly, making it economical to use computer-generated pictures instead of props.

[Oh, that makes complete sense!]

So a computer in a mechanical person that does things much better and faster than people can? That's fascinating.

I love the movies too! They don't have them where I'm from!

They don't exist where I'm from, either. At least, not yet. If I understand right, people from my world will create them in the future. It's rather an exciting thought.

Indeed...my home just has magic rather than technology, and we haven't gotten that far yet!
