This is a stupid little project I decided to undertake.
Oda likes to draw his characters in all manners of interesting outfits for the cover art and color walks. Some of them are pretty damn neat. Some of them, not so much. I decided to go through all (to date) 636 chapters and pull out all of Sanji's appearances, and then rate his outfits on a scale of GQMF to OMFG. It got a little out of hand.
But there's a lot of eye candy under here.
The banners are 1000 pixels max, sorry - that's as small as I could get and I still ended up with multiple banners per category. I fail. But here is the sliding scale of fashion do's and don'ts, with my silly commentary.
Positive end: GQ Motherfucker
Banner #1 - I would hit that
1. black leather and dark jeans? Yes thank you.
2. I even like the gloves. And the patch with his lucky number.
3. I know this is mostly casual wear but DAT ASS. My god, I want to touch it.
4. No complaints about open shirts here. I cropped off the blue shoes, though...tres fashionable, at least.
5. This one's mostly similar to his canon outfits but I like the rings. Oda loves drawing jewelry on them for covers but not in the storyline for some reason.
Banner #2 - still pretty stylin'
1. Pinstriped suit, I can dig it
2. this is all the larger this image was. I think it's a sweater, not a jacket. He looks good, at least. Better than Usopp!
3. badass black leather and no shirt? YES PLZ
4. okay I like the kimono. Even with the chickens. I didn't include a second shot of him in kimono from ch.70. It was superfluous, even with chest showing.
5. idk I just like that he's got other ties besides black.
6. not a terrible waistcoat, but I really like the belt chains. And the hat.
7. pinstriped vest instead? Yeah sure why not.
8. Seriously, Oda, I thought Zoro was the one who didn't wear shirts. The hat's a little dorky but I approve of the rest.
Above average: Casual style
Banner #1 - quality casual wear
1. I think this is where my new love for V-neck t-shirts comes from.
2. The cutoff shorts make this casual. And that face...what is he doing?
3. I love this hat. If I had a larger, clearer pic of it I would knit it.
4. asjkfhoiwahfkljashdaskjhgf hot in a tank top. HOT.
5. I have a lot of sweaters like this. The right man makes them sexy - like timeskip Sanji.
6. Okay so, pink shirt and lime green pants may be questionable, but he makes them look good. And the bracelets.
7. Just another t-shirt. But I love that laugh.
8. LMFAO I don't know, I just like it.
Banner #2 - more of the above
1. I would wear that shirt. His other lucky number. I love the sneakers, too.
2. soccer shirt! They looked cool.
3. I'm not in love with the orange shirt but DAT ASS AGAIN. Zoro even thinks so.
4. vertical striped designs on short-sleeved shirts seem to be his thing. I like.
5. raglan shirt with a collar and sleeve logo...I would wear this, too. Also, I would do him right now in that shirt.
6. The most casual, but it fits him. I do love this outfit.
Bonus picture!
Dragon hoodie from ch.128. I want this in color. I would make and wear that hoodie.
Next step down: I really like that...wait what is that?
Banner - UNSURE
1. I know you can't see much of it but those are some very pink pants. UNSURE.
2. The adventuring outfit is really not that bad. But...is that a lavender hat with a tiny pirate flag on top?
3. I actually like the seam design on the shirt. But. HAT. Sanji. HAT.
4. Well, apparently Sanji does sleep in boxers and a t-shirt. I'm sorry you can't see the boxers better, they really are not sure if want.
5. I'm sorry, but rugby shirts belong in the late 80's. It's not hideous but it's not him.
6. Only unsure because you can't see much of it. His shirt is open again. But the shirt could very well be disgusting again.
7. Very unsure about this winter version. The coat's cool, but the hat and goggles...eh.
Banner - WAT
1. From a Shounen Jump cover. Designs on the collar and front are just...no. I cropped off the red pants, that was a real no.
2. Good lord what is that shirt. That's worse than the Skypeia shirt.
3. I'm so glad I don't have this in color because I don't want to know what color polka dots those are.
4. I KNOW they're supposed to be little islands with palm trees on them, but they look like tomatoes. Sorry bro, this shirt does not do it for me.
5. I can take pink dress shirts, but not with orange suit jackets. Nice jeans though.
6. Nice t-shirt but ORANGE PANTS?!
7. Oh god what is this even. The baseball shirt is okay but the rest is just...no.
8. I don't mind the leather jacket but what the hell are those pants?
Bonus pic!
Very unsure about this winter coat. It appears to be dalmation-spotted. Jury's out on this one.
Bottom of the scale: OMFG WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
Banner #1 - what the shit, man?!
1. Okay, the jacket alone wouldn't be bad. And hey shirtless again. But...THE HAT. THE CAPRIS. I cropped out the flip-flops. This outfit makes no sense.
2. Sanji! No! Bad shirt! Bad cook! (like the shoes though)
3. VIKING. LMFAO. Yes there were a few random "theme" covers and all of them are hideous.
4. Cowboy is bad enough but cowboy with flowery vest is just wrong.
5. I know it's tiny but that is the ugliest shirt ever. Aside from #2.
6. This outfit makes me laugh my damn ass off every time. It's on one of the openings for the anime, too. PURPLE PIMP PANTS AND FUR COAT LMFAO
Banner #2 - just more of the same weirdness
1. the "barbarian" theme cover I think. Very stupid. Nice chest Sanji.
2. the "Chopperman!" mascot theme cover. At least he doesn't have an onigiri head (Zoro)
3. not quite as bad as the themes but just. God, it's lolsome.
Not in the Scale - Swimwear
Banner - swimwear
1. It's an odd perspective but I kind of like these trunks. And the black shirt. Not sure about the bling. Once again, Oda puts lots of jewelry on them outside the storyline.
2. Pffff green?
3. Interesting design. Apparently Sanji is not into plain one-color trunks.
4. I know there's no outfit here. I just included this shot for the arm porn.
So, it's clear that when he wants to be sexy and fashionable, Sanji hits all the right notes, but when Oda's on crack...watch out.
I like to think that in the City, he errs toward the side of GQMF and Casual Style. Especially with modern clothing.
