This is certainly not a challenge.

I certainly am not challenging you to tell me how you go about reading a series of books ( Read more... )

I definitely plough right through them as quickly as possible. Even if the series turns out to be way longer than I expected, I usually stay with it - as long as the author manages to keep my interest, of course.

However, series that have more than seven books usually end up getting tedious. I think that a trilogy or a quartet is the perfect length for a series.

When there's a long gap, I tend to hold off reading any of them until they're all out, because otherwise it's too hard for me to wait. If I do read what books are out, I always reread them right before reading the latest one.

No, the percentage of fantasy books that are standalones is probably about 0.000001%. X.X

Don't they write stand-alone fantasies anymore?

Sadly, no, pretty much nobody. At least not in the classic high fantasy genre.

Whether I devour a series whole or break it up by reading other books in between really depends on how desperate I am to know what happens next. :) I'd say about half the time a series sucks me in enough so that I have to finish it now-right-now. Otherwise, I'll take my time with it so as not to burn out.

I try really, really hard not to pick up a new book without knowing whether it's part of a series. If I'm running the risk of a long term commitment, I want to know that going in. It won't stop me, necessarily, but I get really annoyed when a series is sprung on me.

Part of me wishes that I had the patience to wait on reading a long-running series until it's finished, but I just can't. If I have to re-read the last book or two before the next comes out (as with ASoIaF), I don't mind so much.

It depends on the series and how I felt about the book that I finished. In some, I will read until I can't stand the characters or the plot goes in a direction I don't like. In others, I just need to take a break and revitalize before I jump back in. Often, other people affect how interested I am in a book. When people are too gung-ho collectively, it tends to turn me off from series. It's rather self-defeating, as I usually like the books once I get around to them but I hate being in the middle of a craze ( ... )
