Maus is amazing. I haven't read most of the others (although The Book Thief is in my house and will probably be read soon).

Two more for the list, both highly recommended: Atonement by Ian MacEwen and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon.

I have four of these books in my TBR pile -- this list is going to make the pile massive And uh. I'm pretty certain there's no "The" in front of JG Ballard's Empire of the Sun. (The book is sitting on my bedside table, mocking me for not picking it up. My sister loves it.)

Other suggestions:
-- Carrie's War by Nina Bawden (my memory's pretty hazy about this one; I read it when I was in school but I loved it then)
-- The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng (currently reading this -- it's set partly in the town where I grew up, so I'm probably a bit biased towards it XD)

once, a customer threated to shut down our store because we had schindler's list in fiction.

the book of lost things by john connolly
exodus by leon uris i believe deals with the aftermath but i haven't read it, i've just seen it come through the store a lot.
the boy in the striped pajamas by john boyne, also a book i haven't read but which someone recommended to me 2 years ago and sounded very awesome.
