Freedom Ring

Hiruko and I are preparing for the gay superheroes panel we'll host in omgtwoweeksaaaaa and are pretty much done with the planning of said panel. We have a "omg this is so much fail" category in the panel, and the star of this category is Freedom Ring. So much gay fail, Marvel, it's not even funny.

Let me talk to you about Freedom Ring with a lot of pictures. )

The whole character is written really shitty. He was only created to die so they never really worked on his characterisation at all.

It's even worse than the rumours make it sound.

/Hiruko in a new journal what up

The syrup this. The syrup thing. The syrup thing. I'm not sure why it bugs me so much but it does. I think it's mainly because, hey, you've got five issues to make this character into someone to care about before he dies a horrible phallic death. LET'S WASTE A TON OF OUR FIRST ISSUE ON SYRUP. I think it is supposed to be character defining somehow but it just flops and makes me think Kirkman's subtly trying to imply he's Canadian. Or something. Eh.

So many things wrong with this, man. So many. And it could have had a lot of potential in the hands of someone who could write a gay main character. :/

...................................

I want him to be Canadian/Québécois.

It would fit in with the whole "if superheroes are gay, they're not American!" thing.

I read pretty much everything with Terry, and even though yeah, he's only there to be gay, he's really well-written. I like him.

Well everyone knows gay people can't be American. DUH. So obviously the syrup is actually deep and meaningful and a symbol of Curtis's unAmerican-ness, which is why he rejects a red white and blue costume in favor of a red one, like the maple leaf on the Canadian flag and... wow okay this theory is working too well and making me uncomfortable. To sum it up: Kinky Kreme is the only worthwhile thing about this series ( ... )

It really does work way too well. Ugh. Now I'm even more annoyed. Amazing.

That's why the rimming joke between Kyle and JP had so much wank, that's why Ric and Star were so controversial, and that's why the other pairings are too young to have sex or -- some other excuses. It's fine for the books to have gay characters, but to make it into a full-blown sexuality isn't permitted. That's why a woman is writing Daken and is getting flack over it, but she won't quit, and I don't care that she might be pushing it a bit too much. Someone needs to push.

And yes, I agree with this. When I upload the rest of Terry's appearances, I think it will cement that opinion of yours, too. Terry is still the gay character -- he's there to have a crush on Kyle, he's there to have problems coming out to his parents, but it's nice and it... feels right.
