The raft was ready. Or at least as ready as they were going to get it. Some logs fashioned together, a rudimentary mast along with a sail and a rudder all made up the raft. Sam was rather proud of it, considering he knew jack about sailing and had determined all of the necessary components out of books he had picked up around the island. The ( Read more... )

"Ahoy Captain!" Coraline yelled, waving at Sam as she bounded down the beach. Coraline saluted Sam with both hands, grinning at him before she looked at their ship. Coraline could have suggested using her kayak but well, really where was the fun in that? "Arrgh we ready to castoff and sail the seven-one sea?"

"You have four hairs on your chin that's hardly pirate material. I bet you, you couldn't even grow a proper moustache or beard even if you wanted to." Coraline said reaching out to pull on the hairs on his chin. Coraline smiled and laughed at him, pulling her tongue. "And besides I am not pretty."

"Oh, so this isn't- funny, very funny. This is a perfectly respectable dis-respectable beard and I have only just started growing it out," he said, poking her in the side as she stuck out her tongue at him.

"And I'm sorry, but you are. You're very pretty. You're going to have to accept that you are one of the beautiful people of the world and take on all the burdens that come with it."

"How long have you been growing it for? Eight years?" Coraline asked cheekily, smiling at him. Coraline squrimed when he poked her in the side, her leg jerking so the paddle unbalanced a little. "I am not. I'm... gawky. Even when I'm older I'm still leggy. Just leggy with..."

Coraline trailed off, not really wanting to discuss her chest area with Sam of all people. "What sort of burden are we talking about?"

"This is like... four weeks growth. Max. And it is totally epic, or do I need to go into details about how much Cassie likes it?" Sam threatened. He would go there if necessary, he didn't like losing arguments, even ridiculous ones.

"And you are not gawky," he added, poking her again for good measure. "And the burden of people thinking you only got something because of how you look, people always complimenting you, staring at you. Thinking you're not smart."

"Gross Sam! So, gross. Cassie's my friend that's wrong. I'm not listening!" Coraline said covering her ears immediatly. The sudden movement dislodged the paddle, dropping into the water with a quiet splash that was drowned out by Coraline's 'lalala not listening'. "No one compliments me. Not even when I was a grown up. Although there was a lot of staring and umming. And looking."

Coraline paused, squealing when he poked her again and slapped his hand away. "Why were they staring?" Coraline asked innocently. Well, not so innocently. That would make up for the Cassie comment.

Sam was too busy laughing to notice Coraline's paddling going into the water. He would have to keep in mind that she was definitely disturbed by that kind of talk. He would definitely use it against her in the future if necessary.

"Look, you are attractive, okay?" Sam said, trying not to feel gross while saying that. "But you're 14. People might take it the wrong way if any guy over like... 16 says that you're attractive. And when you were older, it was probably because it was super awkward that you had an attractive adult body, but people still knew you were 14."

"Why? It's not like when I'm sixteen I'm going to suddenly be a different person. I'll still be me, there's just more of me when I'm older," Coraline said making a face at that. And at the fact that Sam called her attractive. It was Sam, he was like an annoying little brother except for the fact that he was older than her. "Um, they didn't all exactly know I was fourteen. Some of them might have thought I was an... adult."

"Trust me, you will probably be a slightly different person when you're 16," Sam said, completely ignoring the 'more of' comment that she made. He did NOT want to think about that. Ever.

"It's not that you're a bad person now, or that you're immature, things just change. And please, please tell me you didn't go around letting people think you were in your twenties."

"I didn't go around letting people think you were in your twenties," Coraline repeated cheekily. Coraline knew what he meant though and didn't really want to answer that question. Aidan really hadn't been impressed about that, they were friends now but it had been very tense for a bit. "Just- not on purpose. I just didn't tell him I was fourteen. We went out."

"Oh Coraline," Sam said, pressing the palm of his hand to his face. That was just not good. It wasn't bad, and he doubted Coraline was malicious about it, but it still could have caused serious problems.

"Went out? Went out how?"
