Last night I saw the play “Ugly Duckling.” It had an all female cast and was all about female issues… like how everyone hated men and was gay (at least it was better than that other play I saw in auburn a few years back…). The acting was not good and the writing left a whole lot of SUBTELTY to be desired ( Read more... )

The point of that play was not subtelty... and most of the actresses were under 20! Come on man. It's a play to raise awareness , not win awards. Which it has done, by the way. And no one hated men. It's supposed to tell you about homophobia, the pressures kids face and suicide. Give it a break.

Homosexuality is really difficult. Bake that in a pie and throw it at my head. That was the play. If that was Carolyn Gage's goal she succeeded. But then this work shouldn't be trumpeted as some piece of drama, but as a bitter dessert. The script was full of empty calories and painful stereotypes. The old jaded dyke. The butch lesbo. The lipstick femme. The punky missunderstood girl. The youthful innocent one. The whorey guilty party… The characters are difficult to relate to and completely one dimensional. Nobody changes. Nobody grows. Nobody fights the system. Nobody wins. Nobody kills themselves. Nobody is alive. The characters dialogue is stiff and uncomfortable. The camp itself is a complete joke. And I hate all the assumptions and exceptions made because this is some kind of necessary societal commentary. A girl who wants to be with an older role model is a “crush?” Give me a break. I also personally find the typical lesbian story of the straight girl being coaxed into homosexuality by the hardcore dyke to be nauseating, ( ... )

After, Sean and I ventured up to the apartments for the first time this year. It was a shindig at Geronimo’s. Maro and I (and then later, Claire and I) Went undefeated at the Beirut table. I seriously never played so well in my life. It was fun times because I did most of the drinking for Maro and Claire. When every left we had a dance party. It was probably the hottest thing I have ever been involved in.

Oh, how I miss Colby....that sounds like it was pretty hot. Ah, the memories...
