Warren frowned as he read the letter one more time. This was apparently not a great week for receiving mail, though he had to at least give Mallory credit this time around. The Court Steward had marched into his office and put the letter into his hand personally, insisted that he was delivering it within minutes of its delivery, in fact, he'd held ( Read more... )

Karla, Warren would find later, was in one of the private parlors that made up the Queen's Suite; the one Karla had instantly dubbed 'the family room'. Cora and Nyles were still more apt to gaze around in wonderment at their surroundings than pay attention to whatever tasks Karla had set them to, but neither Queen nor Consort held that against them.

Between the subdued luxury of the room itself and the closeness to the bedroom of a Territory Queen, this was worlds away from what either child, Blood urchin or landen, had ever been used to.

Karla, cruel taskmaster that she was, had them reading aloud from a book of stories. Nyles kept insisting he was too old to be read to, especially 'baby stories like these,' but Karla held firm. They'd keep reading these stories in the evenings before bed until both of their reading improved.

Warren looked a little more tired than usual as he stepped into the parlor doorway, neatly folded letter in one hand. He didn't speak at first, smiling in spite of himself as he watched the children take turns reading, waiting for a pause between the two of them before he spoke up.

"Karla? Can I interrupt for a moment?"

He didn't say why right off the bat, no, but the fact that he'd already slipped into clothing less suitable for a Glacian Consort and more fitting for a New York businessman might have been a hint.

At least he hadn't packed his overnight bag just yet.

"Warren!" Before Karla could even answer, Cora was jumping up from her spot and running over to give him a hug. "You're dressed funny," she said, wrapping her arms around his ribcage. "Not like Blood at all."

"That's because he's dressed for a visit back to his home, New York," Karla agreed, raising an eyebrow as she rose. "That's where his father lives."
