Style: Marian is a rather traditional girl when it comes to style, only with her own edge. When she is within the castle boundaries, she is usually in elegant dresses. However, when it comes to riding or her outings as the Night Watchman, she is usually in clothing more suited to such situations, such as loose trousers. She tends to stick with certain colours mainly red, orange, cream, brown or blue, all colours that she thinks compliments her looks. She is very simple in terms of make up, preferring to stay rather fresh faced or to look natural.

Personality:

Marian is a very generous person. She rarely holds back and often tries to give all that she can to help anyone, despite the consequences to herself. She is often feeding the poor by night despite them not knowing it is her and she prefers it that way. She tries her best to see the good in people. Although she knows there is not much good in some such as the Sheriff, she can see the good in others, such as Guy. When she can see this she does try to pull the good to the forefront no matter the consequences.

Marian is a very determined young woman and will usually fight to get what she wants. When it comes to her determination to look after her father she will not stop at anything including turning her charms on Guy. She is very loving, but does not give her love easily. Truly, her heart belongs to Robin, however she did find herself coming to care deeply for Guy. She cares for many people and will try to show it as often as she can. She can be very easily offended when people seem to underestimate her just because she is a woman and loves to prove them wrong. Many people still do not know it is a woman who is the Night Watchman which can occasionally anger her as it seems like many feel that a woman would be unable to do such a thing. Her belief in equality is strong and she believes that women have the right to stand up and speak in situations and not just men. Because of her caring nature she has been forced to harden over the years, especially since Prince John began to start his own reign whilst the King is away. She has seen many people suffer and although it upsets her, she tries to stay strong and focused.

Marian is as much of an adventurer as Robin, and often craves the danger a life like his and her secret identity gets to live. She can not be seen to, because of her place in society and her need to appear loyal to the Sheriff, but that does not stop her dreaming of a free life where she can be less stifled. She is a very independent woman, and acts like she does not need the protection or the help. However, deep down, she enjoys being looked after at times, as long as she is not made to feel inferior during those moments. She is also very strongly opinionated, although this trait has calmed slightly in recent months. If she views something as cruel or barbaric, she rarely keeps those thoughts contained, which often leads her into trouble.

People should not be fooled by her elegant and feminine looks. She is not one for doing task which seem the right things for women to do, like embroidery. She is far happier on the back of a horse, or fighting to help the poor. Of course, she knows how to use her feminine wiles as a weapon to get what she wants.

Marian’s compassion can be seen as a strength, as can her determination. If she is determined to go through with something, usually there is no stopping her. However, she has many weaknesses. For example, her desperate need to see the good in people often gives the wrong impression. When it comes to the situation with Guy, she can see what good there is in him and as she tries to bring that out, it makes Guy think she cares more than she does.

In terms of the Crusades, the situation is very close to her heart. The man she loved decided to leave to be with the King, despite their engagement, and since then she has felt rather bitter about the war in the Holy Land. Even though she did not like Robin leaving, she is completely loyal to the King, and will not be easily swayed by the Sheriff’s constant reminder that she should be loyal to Prince John. She stands on the same side as Robin, but can not show that she is in league with him. There is far too much at stake for her, so she plays a game with the Sheriff and Guy, making them believe that she would never have anything to do with Robin.

Background:

Hometown: She was born in Nottingham and has never left

Family: Her father, Sir Edward Fitzwalter, is 65 years of age and is the former Sheriff of Nottingham. Her mother, Lady Kate Fitzwalter, died due to illness when Marian was five years old.

History:  Marian was born into a life of luxury, her father being the Sheriff gave her the best lifestyle a young girl could hope for. That was, until her mother died. Marian remembers little of her mother since she was only the tender age of five when she died, but can still remember the way she smelt and the feeling of her arms around her. To keep herself occupied, and to keep her thoughts away from the loss of her mother, she began to learn how to ride. It was this one hobby which would come to be her favourite, and she never felt happier than she did on the back of her horse. As well as learning how to ride, she was taught how to fight, an option given to her father. This was a skill which would come into use later on in her life.

She always enjoyed visiting the other villages, and there was one village in particular. Locksley soon became a favourite, and she would argue it was because of the villagers and not because of the rather handsome young Robin. Robin clearly had the same feelings, and the courting began, but she did not necessarily make it easy for him despite her attraction to him. The bickering they had was something which would continue into their later lives, and their relationship seems to be based on. Soon, with both admitting defeat and admitting to the attraction, they were engaged and Marian could not be happier.

This happiness was short lived, when Robin announced he was to leave to fight for King Richard in the Holy Land. As much as Marian admired his bravery and loyalty, she became rather closed off from many around her, upset by his actions. Not long after Robin left, her father was removed as the Sheriff, a new one being put in place. This new Sheriff was more along Prince John’s line of thinking, and Nottingham soon began to suffer. It was then, whilst she was ill but decided her medicine was better off given to the poor, she decided to fight. Going under the disguise of the person the people called the Night Watchman; she began to fight for justice, whilst giving food to the poor, and helping them in time of need.

As she grew older, she caught the attention of the Sheriff’s lieutenant, Sir Guy of Gisborne. Such attention was certainly not wanted, but he persisted. Then one day, Robin came back, and Marian felt the hurt she had buried within herself bubbling to the surface again. As much as she still loved him deep down, she felt betrayed that he had left. Once Robin was outlawed, she had to be careful. She still wanted to protect him, and would often tell him secrets to help him, and one day she was close to being discovered. In a bid to protect her life and the life of her father, she had no option but to agree to marry Guy.

When the day of the wedding arrived, with no sign of Robin, she had no option but to go through with it. Just in time, Much saved the day, alerting her to the things Guy had done in the past. She punched him, and left him at the altar, riding off with Robin to save her father and alert the other Nobles that the King had not returned. It was then they shared their first kiss since he returned.

With such humiliation, Guy became far more distant to her, and soon she found herself under house arrest in the castle with her father. This, however, did not stop her helping Robin. However, spending time in the castle allowed her the chance to get closer to Guy, working up that relationship again. Of course, this helped her in terms of getting what she wanted. When she became part of a bargain, Guy tried to warn her but found his loyalty split. Having no option but to agree with the Sheriff, he allowed her to become part of the negotiation and she soon found herself being taken away from Nottingham by an old friend of her father, who wanted revenge. However, the Sheriff and Guy, along with Allan, tricked him, killing him and Guy was straight to helping her. As she rode off with him, she could not help but catch Robin’s eye. She loves Robin, but must keep Guy close for their own benefit. She just hoped he understood.

Writing Sample:

Marian sat at the small window once more, her eyes taking in everything they could. Being under house arrest made her appreciate even more what surrounded her, the places she could no longer go unless she managed to sneak past her guards, as well as the general castle guards. She managed it occasionally, but the risk was sometimes too great. The risk to her father, more than herself. It was almost painfully cruel that she could see the forest in the far off distance. Her heart ached as she thought of Robin who would still be out there, free to help people when he could.

Yet locked away from her.

It ached, far more than when he left to go to the Holy Land. When he left all those years ago, he was unbelievably far away. Now, he was so close but she could not see nor touch him. She only got fleeting moments with him, moments where she revelled in his closeness to get her through her time locked away in the dark castle.

She glanced at her father, asleep on the slightly comfortable bed. He was suffering more than she, his health gradually deteriorating. She had to be strong, had to obey the Sheriff as much as she could, because she could not risk her father being treated in any ill way. And she knew that if she was punished, he would be too. Watching her being punished would be a punishment enough for him. But she wanted to get him out of here, even if their home was burnt down. She had to get him somewhere far more comfortable and warmer, because yes they had heat but the surroundings and the stone walls still made it seem exceptionally cold.

“I'll get us out of here, father. I promise,” she whispered silently at his sleeping form. She knew she would do what she could.

Her eyes once more went to the window and towards the distant trees. She felt a weak smile on her face as she closed her eyes for a moment, losing herself in memories of Robin. They would help her get through this, help her determination.

“Don't you dare give up on me, Robin,” she said aloud once more, surprising herself as her eyes began to fill up. She quickly brushed them away, standing up.

Well she had to start trying to get out of here at some point.
