modern American war films tend to be a bit rah-rah PATRIOTISM for me. The underlying ideology or something makes me feel uncomfortable.

Have you ever seen Das Boot? It's totally depressing, but v. good. No POW camps, but the action takes place almost entirely inside a German WWII submarine, and there is relatively little blood. Sadly it doesn't have Will Smith in it, largely because everyone in it is actually German.

Will Smith really does make every film better, though. I actually have a small collection of films that are good because of him.

It has many subtitles. There is also a dubbed version, but that's much less awesome.

Yes, and Herbert Groenemeyer. It didn't focus on boots, though, I was disappointed.

I love that film. Stallone made such a bad footballer, especially since most of the best ones in the world at that time were in it.

The funny thing about Michael Caine's career, of course, being that he got his start playing a really posh officer. Named Gonville.

The other funny thing is that Demi Moore once played his daughter. I can't explain why this is funny, but it never fails to amuse me when I think of it.

It also has Pele in it, and probably some footballers who were famous back in the day.
Most notably Bobby Moore (Captain of the English world cup winning team of 1966) and Ossie Ardiles (Argentinian international, won the FA Cup with Spurs around the time the film was released, and features in a couple of incredibly iffy Chas and Dave records). Most of the other British players and some of the "German" ones, played for Ipswich, who were quite big at the time.

It was one of my favourite films when I was a kid, but the bit where the goalie's arm got broken always made me wince.
