Love-in part one....

So in light of being more positive at noscans_daily and its sister site on Insane Journal, I've decided to ask everyone who their favourite character is (or are) and why they love that character.

Some characters just make us want to pick up comics and read about them. Some are the sole reason we buy comics because we want to read about our favourite character(s ( Read more... )

I love it when fans put so much thought into the reasons why they love their favourite characters.

Also what I like about Dick is that he's flawed. A lot of these characters are lifelike -- they have imperfections, too.
Dick has gotten angry with Batman (and rightly so). And Babs has gotten angry with him for not being "serious" enough. But it just makes him so much more of a rounded character.

Both those essays were awesome! Especially since I've just been reading another discussion about Batman's no-kill rule, and I think you described it very much the way I see it. I mean, to me, Batman's no-kill rule isn't arbitrary or selfish, an attempt to keep his own soul clean even if people die, it's a balance he strikes because he knows himself. Without it he probably wouldn't be able to continue.

Anyway, loved your essays!

I think my favorite character is Black Cat. There's so many components of her that I love, and I feel that she never gets the attention/respect she deserves. She's one of the most realistic characters in my opinion (given the fact she didn't love Peter Parker, but could love the dashing, mysterious and popular Spider-Man) and then growing up as a character to realize the difference between her lust for Spider-man and her love for Peter Parker. A lot of people hate her and think she was a horrible addition to the Spider-man books, but I think it was a nice contrast to Peter's life (considering all of his girls loved Peter, but he couldn't tell his secret identity too).

Obviously, Harvey Dent is my number one, and has been a favorite of mine for over fifteen years. But for a period of time, my obsession with Harvey was matched (and at one point, even surpassed) by my love for Hal Jordan.

And often times, that love was only strengthened due to the sheer amount of hatred that Hal inspires in some fans. Last year, when I learned to my shock and horror that my girlfriend at the time--*gasp!*--didn't actually care all that much for Hal, it actually got me wondering, "Wait, why the hell DO I like this character so much, even though there aren't exactly a ton of stories I can show to people and say, 'This is why,'?"

So I spent a couple hours writing out my thoughts, and the result was the following essay: Why Hal Jordan Matters (To Me).

I was actually considering posting this essay on scans_daily, complete with relevant scans to support my points. Ultimately, I never did because A.) I was lazy, but more importantly, B.) I was too scared of inciting wank. But since you asked, and since you seem to be open to essays ( ... )

And I actually have been reading the essays!

I was actually considering posting this essay on [info]scans_daily, complete with relevant scans to support my points. Ultimately, I never did because A.) I was lazy, but more importantly, B.) I was too scared of inciting wank. But since you asked, and since you seem to be open to essays, there you go.

I think you should post the essay. We honestly need more essays (with scans) on s_d, imo. Whether you agree with what the essay has to say about a character/event/comic/situation, they at least make you think about it. And possibly want to talk about it. Or even go through your comic collection and make scans to counter that point. Or just pick up those comics. :-D

And seriously, I don't think you see enough Harvey love. So I know I'm open to hearing the reasons for the love!

Sadly, real life is going to keep me away from a scanner for the next month or five, but I'll keep it in mind. I doubt it'll lose its relevance during that time, but if it does and all the Hal-haters suddenly have reason to go, "Oh, I GET him now!", then huzzah!

But I agree, I would like to see more essays and thoughtful analysis on scans_daily. I just wish it had the following and readership that the old s_d had. Sigh.

That essay was awesome. I'm intimidated by the GLC, wanting to know more about it but feeling like there's so much, but I could understand everything you were saying about Hal. In the little I've read I do tend to lean towards him.

But I've also always been a fan of that kind of character--including Superman.
