FiveThirtyEight does a piece on the proportion of female characters in comics and such.

It doesn't go into much beyond simply counting them, the rate of new characters, and the percentage of new characters they represent, but still, food for thought.

Anyone remember what happened around 2001-2002 that made DC introduce almost 45% new female characters?

That's a good question, and I don't.

Of note, this doesn't necessarily mean significant characters, just ones introduced at that time with a wiki page.
