I asked this over on Tumblr in response to this post on Starling's departure from BoP at DC Women Kicking Ass: Other than Starling, has the DCnU created any successful new characters ( Read more... )

No, this is good! I was hoping to jumpstart a discussion with this post.

Who was new in the DCnU that you liked, at least initially?

I'm (sort of) one of the "new fans" who just started buying books on the regular since the reboot. I can't say there are any characters I love now (Starling aside) that didn't exist pre-reboot. I mean, I didn't buy books often, but I was aware of characters. And none of the characters I love now are Brand Spanking New. The only real positive difference for me? I really love Red Hood and the Outlaws. Not only has it improved characterization for Jason, but I enjoy Roy and Kory more now than before as well. Aside from that, I don't notice a marked improvement, although I'm content to happy with all my books.

So... whatever happened to that new Aqualad? Wasn't he meant to be one of the big names once the Nu52 happened?

no, he was one of the characters who's story was cut off by the introduction of the Nu52.

Talon is actually a very enjoyable series I feel guilty for not posting more of over on s_d. It's not groundbreaking, but it's entertaining and well told.

I think you eventually have to ask "When does a reboot become a new character?"

The new Amethyst (another excellent series) has a very different story to it than the original. Rather than a sort of genderswapped Shazam with more than a pinch of She-Ra, fighting the evil Dark Opal, it's a sort of political story where a young woman comes into a title and powers on another world, and the internal politics and inter-House rivalries are just as deadly, but there's no automatic "bad guy". Other than the name and the preponderance of gemstones, they don't have a lot in common.

I'm not really able to afford comic books right now, but when I did, I usually made space for DC's Dial H for Hero. Now those had some characters that were fun to see.

Same goes for Demon Knights, from what I heard.

Both are being cancelled now, of course.
