I remember in the '70s, this ran at some ungodly hour of the morning, and I stayed up all night to watch it (no DVR in those days, kids!). After it was over, I was half-convinced I'd dreamed the whole thing, it was so bizarre. The idea of taking out Superman via psychological warfare is a decent one, but of course it's done is such a silly, shallow way that Supes just looks like a whiny chump. The songs are fun, though.
I guess it's historically interesting as a sort of halfway point between the campy Batman tv show and the more serious Superman movie that came along a few years later (David Newman, who co-wrote the musical, also worked on the screenplay for the Donner movie).
There's another Batman alumni here besides David Wayne -- The mob boss, Malachi Throne, was the uncredited actor who played "False Face".
Nice that the two hippie kids who restore Superman's confidence are named "Jerry" and "Joe".
