Yeah, in the old DCU they had aged Billy up to the point where the transformation element was almost irrelevant by the end except for giving him powers. I think he was around 16-17 then, and in college by the time the whole Trials of Shazam thing went down.
Now, to me, that's missing the point of the character on an almost cosmic level, but you're right - teen Billy did date Stargirl briefly. :)
They didn't de-age him too much in the new DCU, but that little bit helps for me.
I wouldn't mind us getting an "out" Gear (from the Static Shock cartoon). Dwayne McDuffie mentioned that he was intended to be gay, and was written with that in mind, but it never went anywhere.

Did he appear in the New 52 at all? I don't even know anymore.
