Happy as a Mountie in a Shack

Feb 13, 2012 11:51

Okay, I realize I've been away from the due South fandom for a while, but what the hell is going on? We got wankified? Yeesh.

I don't know staranise, and judging from her LJ post, I wouldn't want to know her. But her take on cesperanza's Canadian Shack 10th Anniversary Challenge is pretty damn off-base, and it's gotten me all angered up.

And here's why )

Sing it, sister! *joins in with harmony*

And this in particular:

The due South fandom shares a dedication to research, to creating real lived-in spaces, that I haven't seen in any other fandom.

YES. SO VERY MUCH. ♥

Also: *alllll the hugs*

Exceptionally. There are so many things I can find wrong with that particular style of self-inflicted activist fury.

THANK YOU so much for writing this. I was so ticked off when I read that post I was ready to leave a huge comment about the context of the meme and how it wasn't what she was characterizing it as at all. But it was obvious from her comments she wasn't interested in anything but being right, and my blood pressure was high enough.

But seriously, context, people! If the canon is that it's a no-indoor-plumbing shack, well ... It started in the pilot, when Gerard says of Ben's father, "All he ended up with was that shack of his." And in Bounty Hunter, Fraser himself corrects the description of "cabin" to, "more of a lean-to, really." Which my dictionary describes as a synonym for shack. It's NOT some kind of luxury vacation getaway.

And, yes, DS writers do some of the most awesome research ever!

Yeah, exactly! I was going to comment too, but realized it wouldn't result in anything but me getting angry and her acting like an ass. In the name of self-preservation, I think it's best that we kept our opinions to ourselves (and our journals :-)

Good point about the way the show imagines its spaces, too. I'd absolutely call the Fraser cabin a "shack". Stupid person, not understanding canon!

She's a nutter. And nasty. And not interested in what anyone else has to say. And now I can't get back the minutes I just wasted reading what she wrote. *gets out the brain bleach* Good to see you posting and I hope you are well!

Aww, thanks Ruthie! I'm doing okay. And glad to have something to get all angered up about!

On the up side, the Fandom Wank post (and the attending comments) is hysterical, and a fair number of the commenters have expressed an interest in renewing their acquaintance with the show. So Ha! Ha, I say!

I noticed some of the commenters on the Post of Ignorance and Self-Righteous Twattery are under the impression that Due South was created and produced by us Americans. They've no idea it was a very Canadian show, and of course She's not correcting them. What are they thinking, that a bunch of evil, whip-wielding Americans forced a cast of helpless Canadians to perform some sort of humiliating circus for their amusement? Okay, yes, it was for our amusement, but there were no whips, I'm pretty sure. Just Paul Gross being a weirdo, which I believe is his regular habit anyway. :)

Edited for me being childish. What, she made me cranky!

Hey kiddo, how are you doing?

Ha indeed! due South is awesome, and the more people who know about it the better.

I got that vibe from the PoIaSRT, too. I don't think anyone really understood who created and produced due South, and what the context of the show was. Also: Paul Gross. That really should be enough to explain away any weirdness.

I'm doing okay! Just truckin' along. How are you?
