Things That Go Bump

Okay, so I've spent a lot of my downtime here at Camp Crystal Lake watching Supernatural, mainly because I'm too exhausted at day's end to do much more than watch something short-ish (45mins is a perfect length!) and then crash. And I'm enjoying the show: I'm not a big fan of horror flicks or ghosts stories, but I dig the show's mythos (so much ( Read more... )

supernaturally delicious

Yeah, why is that? Is it because the J2 stories are more memorable than the SPN fics? Or do you just really, really love flair bartending AUs?

And thank you for the recs! I suspect that you and I have, y'know, some similar fic preferences. So maaaaabye I will check these out. :-)

*hugs you* How's tricks, anyway?

'I think Fraser and Sam Winchester would have a lot in common: crappy childhoods, emotionally distant and overly demanding fathers, an inherently gentle nature, and a strong friendship with a guy who likes classic cars :-)'
I they do have a lot in common, don't they? I've always thought it was cool that the Impala and the GTO are black.

'And Dean! Good lord, how is Dean so attractive?'
I know! I think both the brother are very attractive.

I can't help with the Supernatural stories; I pretty much ship Dean/A character from season 4, and I don't want to spoil season four for you. I'm just glad I have someone else on my f-list how likes the show.

Fraser and Sam Winchester = secret soul!twins. Ditto for Kowalski and Dean. Supernatural is what due South would've been if dS was...less Canadian, I guess. *g*

And I totally know who Character A is! dessert_first and sisterofdream and

'Character A is hot, and I am looking forward to the episodes where he shows up.'
He does have some great episode and he gets quite a bit of character development over the course of the season. Because I ended up liking him so much, I bought the three other seasons on dvd (even though he's not in them).

'Fraser and Sam Winchester = secret soul!twins. Ditto for Kowalski and Dean. Supernatural is what due South would've been if dS was...less Canadian, I guess. *g*'
I could see RayK as a Dean type character, I guess that makes RayV a demon; demons tend to be very snappy dressers.

*highfives you back*

'You and I may be secret!soul twins, too!'
Greatness! We should wear matching outfits.

they ARE appealing, those boys. i thought you'd like them! i really, really, really LOVE the show, too. it gets better as it goes on, and i am constantly surprised by it.

as for fic, i think the first thing you need to do is read everything ever written by eighth_horizon. here's her fic website. a lot of it is gen, and i'd start with the salvation 'verse, which includes 'the month of open doors' (my favorite OMG). the 'verse goes AU after the end of s1, so no spoilers.

ps. and this sam/dean story makes the most amazing use of shakespeare quotes i've ever seen in fanfic: on midsummer nights i dream of winchesters. it was the first wincest story i read other than astolat's (which i THINK i read back before i was ever in dS, just cuz...astolat).

Heee, this is ENTIRELY your fault. Well, you and Dess. Dess kept making me watch the show, and you kept reccing stories that sounded interesting. So! Um, stop being awesome, okay? Please? Because now I'm plotting vampire stories in my head, and me + Supernatural cannot go anywhere good. Angsty, yes. But in an ouchy way.

(And it totally is an awesome show. It's inventive, and funny, and I really do like the Good vs. Evil battle stuff, and all the mangst. I...just really want to give them both a hug, y'know? And also do very naughty things to their bodies. But mostly hugs!)

Thanks for the recs, Z! I appreciate it!

Got you! I KNEW this would hit all the right angst buttons! And the pretty boy buttons! And the guys-with-cool-cars buttons! MY SHOW!

While I adore Sam in a crazy fangirl way, I LOVE Dean Winchester in a way I didn't think it was possible to love a fictional character. He's my favorite anything, anyfandom, ever. I can't even find the words - its what I feel for Fraser, but turned up to around a billion. (In the past two seasons, I have seen more and more Dean and Fraser similarities, under Fraser's decorum and Dean's hedonism)

Um, expect an EPIC recs list this evening ! (when I'm actually "allowed" to be online - I'll even try to hit some gen stories, though I am unashamed of my Sam/Dean shipper "proclivities") There's a huge amount of fic in the fandom, a lot of which is very good, but you sort of need to know where to look, since there's a lot of newbie writers playing in the 'verse. crack_impala is a VERY good place to start ( ... )

Heeee, you know me too well, Sadie! Those are some GOOD BUTTONS. And SPN hits 'em all, yes yes. And...DEAN! Awww, Dean! (You're totally right, re: Fraser's decorum and Dean's hedonism being only shallow differences. If Dean Winchester was Canadian, he'd totally be Fraser! And vice-versa :-)

I am LOOKING FORWARD to the epic recs list! And I would LOVE some podic - I've done quite a lot of driving, and new stories to listen to would be very welcome.

Dude, I hear you. How could anyone even THINK about anything other than Dean? Seriously. And oh, god, I JUST watched the Christmas episode from S3. I just...that broke everything inside me. Ouch. Oh, DEAN! And SAM!

The angst button is a very important one! It makes me cry. In canon! I LOVE when things make me cry.

(I think Dean's hedonism is AS performative as Fraser's "Mountie Perfect Mountie-ness", and it all stems from that same motivation - duty and family and the attempt to live up to that idealized absent father. It all LOOKS very different, but it breaks my heart the same way)

Okay, podfic recs, since others have covered the fic rec part:

Gen
I don't really read a lot of gen (Z might be better with this), but some that I really like:

You know issaro via Hawks & Hands, y? As much as I love her SPN and dS Sweet Charity stuff, SPN is her best fandom for me!

Receding , by Mink minkmix. It sort of goes off the rails at the end a bit, but up until that, OUCH.

Old Rebel Yeller by big_pink. Ghosts, Civil War reenactments, and the MOST PAINFUL dissection of the daddy issues I've ever seen.

Another HUGE gen project(10 hours):
Of Bastard Saints by nilchance and beanside, read by grrli and embroiderama. This is a VERY solid rec on the fic, which I think you will love, a more conditional ( ... )

Haha! Welcome on board :D

Well, the search for Supernatural fanfic is a bumby, bumpy road. So much bad!fic and quite a bit of pretty disturbing stuff - and by that I don't mean the wincest, which I've quite grown to perv over like - but mysogynist stuff (written by women, wtf?), and skeevy age differences in pairings. I've been squicked so many times diving into this fandom.

BUT. There is some really, really good stuff out there, too.

I think you'll like hansbekhart's stuff, beware of spoilers, though. I'll recommend you these in particular:

Title: Never Let Me Down Again (Crappy Music Dean Would Totally Never Listen To, Except When He Does) gen
http://hansbekhart.livejournal.com/213907.html

Title: The Miner’s Lamp sam/dean
http://hansbekhart.livejournal.com/225708.html

Title: Beach Blanket Poltergeist (1/3) genhttp://hansbekhart.livejournal.com/203871.html... )

Ooooh, thank you! That list is very, very helpful indeed. And yes! The mysogyny really is terrible. I mean, it's fairly prevalent on the show (particularly the 1st season) and maybe the fic writers picked up on that, but...yikes. I did read some really, really horrifying stories before I came to you folks for advice.

Thanks again, E! I am happily off to read...
