It's (Not) the End of the World As We Know It, And I Feel Fine

Sep 10, 2008 20:29

I didn't know about the Large HardonHadron Collider test today. This alarms me. I'm...glad the world didn't end? Although torra's post made me think that it's not quite safe to come out of the bunker yet. I know that the experiment is probably safe and that a lot of the public anxiety about the project is based on a misunderstanding of what CERN is ( Read more... )

Man, there are synchrotrons and particle accelerators all over the damn place. Granted, the LHC is bigassed, but they haven't managed to blow one up yet. I trust those guys to know what they're up to. They are not fucking around! Some day I want to go the to light sources in Chicago or Saskatoon. Biologists use the things too, you know? So, I guess I would have regretted never getting X-ray data on a protein I purified? Ha. (Except not really. I'm not a crystallographer.)

And yeah, WTF, Roger Ebert.

I only understood about half of that :-) But! I hope you can go to the light sources in Chicago! I will come along for the food and the research opportunity :-)

*shakes fist* Ebert!

Dude a trip to Chicago without SB is NO TRIP AT ALL. And I would love to see the Southside! And not get shot! So I shall leave the details up to you. Still. Pilsen!

-presses fingers together- I'm more worried that it doesn't seem to have made too many newscasts...

Hrm. Ebert might have stupid editors. Do let us know the results of this email.

Yeah, why the radio silence on the experiment? I watched the national newscast last night and there wasn't a word about it, unless they reported on the story whilst I was doing the dinner dishes. Hmmm.

This mystery with Ebert is mysterious indeed. *boggles at him* If I do send the email I shall definitely report back on it.

Pull a Canadian hat trick and see Paul Gross, Callum Keith Rennie and Hugh Dillon in person. Even if I only actually spoke to Callum. (Plus! Enrico Colantoni totally smiled at me!)

You DID!!! I didn't think of it that way. You totally rock. And you made a hockey reference, too! You deserve some kind of award from the Queen. Whatever they give to Canadians. Order of the...Beaver? ;) Sorry. Can a furriner campaign for a fancy Canadian award for you?

:) Much love.

P.S. I ignore that "world will end" stuff. I think that the Big Joke the universe has in store for us is that the "world" (by which I don't mean our planet, which is temporary, but on a much larger scale than normal human values of "temporary") will not end. We're stuck with life. :)

Heee! I suppose - I'd have to check the rule book, but I think so :-)

I am eager to see some American responses to Passchendaele and I agree with you that Ebert's not mentioning the film in his story is curious and disheartening. Passchendaele is a film that contains alot of Ebert's favourite elements.

Yes! I thought so too! It really does seem like it'd be right up his alley. Ah well. Maybe he's holding back his review in the event of an American release?

I'm really at a loss.

Maybe he is saving thoughts for an end-of-TIFF review. Though it has been worrying me how his health has been impacting upon his ability to do his columns and reviews in a timely manner; I hope this isn't an indication his health has taken a downturn.
