"Would you like a slice of irony with your protest pie?"

Last night I went to a Toronto Town Hall meeting about the recent funding cuts directed at the Canadian film and television industry. I posted about it a couple of days ago, but long story short...the Conservative government have cut $14.5 million from cultural grant programs. Since 2006 they have cut nearly $60 million in arts funding from the ( Read more... )

Oddly, one of Canada's first major feature films (Carry on, Sargeant! from 1928) was about WW1. It was considered quite expensive for the time, and IMDB says it was backed (privately) by Bennett and Meighen. There doesn't seem to be a lot about it on the web, though.

I would demonstrate about the cuts in Arts funding except that we're not having any demonstrations here in the tundral wastes. We are getting about 2-3 10% postings per week from Conservative MPs, seeking to inform us about the wonderful job Harper is doing at oppressing the poor, though.

Hmmm, I'll have to track Carry on, Sargeant! - I think it's been screened before in Toronto as part of a retrospective on Canadian cinema.

Fabulous. I just don't understand at how people can fail so profoundly at being outraged by this kind of stuff. Although, if you are located where I suspect you're located on the tundral wastes, perhaps poverty isn't as important an issue, given the local political environment. *rolls eyes*

Have FUN despite, y'know, the Issues. I can't wait to hear about Passchendaele and can't wait until it's released so I can come up and see it. :)

You definitely need to come up and see it! The movie was fantastic - Paul did us all proud. (Because that was a goal of his, of course). It was fantastic, and definitely a good excuse to use should require one to visit Canada. I think you'll like it very much, Auk! (There's a whole thing with kestrels in the film's symbology system. It made me think of you!)

Oddly, this news reminds me of a certain scene in due South (Perfect Strangers).
"It's interesting, isn't it? The Government funding of the arts in Canada produced a glut of filmmakers at the same time as American domination of Canadian cinemas left these enthusiastic young artists with very few arenas in which to ply their craft."
Ooh, lookit, now we're in opposite land! I wonder if we'll still get to see really high-quality Police Recreations...
-looks forward eagerly to movie-
