A couple of quick research questions...

1. Do packages of cigarettes in the US have a surgeon general's warning label on them? What does it look like? What does it say, usually? Here in Canada our cigs are labelled with some fairly gruesome shots of throat cancer, mouth cancer, diseased lungs, all with the "Smoking causes cancer" or "Pregnant women should not smoke" warning labels in ( Read more... )

Tucson is kind of in a bowl. On the north you see the Catalinas, on the west is Tucson mountains, east is Rincon mountains, and south is another mountain range that B can't remember the name offhand, but it's big - over 10,000 ft. But not "the Sierra" if you mean Sierra Nevada.

It's a fairly spread-out city. I wouldn't say it has an urban core, really. Just lots of strips and suburbs.

In December it's cool and sunny. Not really hot - I mean, the sun will feel hot, but it's not hot like summer.

(I live about 1 hour from the Four Corners, and B. went to school in Tucson.)

Thanks! That does help a lot! I had a couple of references to the Sierras in there...which are in Nevada. Many thanks to you and B for helping me avoid looking like an idiot (as much as possible, anyway).

Actually, the Sierra (note no s on the end!) is in California. :-)

And you give me info on Canada, so I'm happy to do the same for the American southwest.

The spelling is noted, thank you. (Someday I swear I'll prove I'm halfway competent with the spelling). And if you ever need anything, research-wise about Canada, I'm the go-to girl. Unless you want to know about the Maritimes or Ontario. Or Quebec. Then you're on your own.

They're pretty small, compared to other countries, and go on the side of the box, from what I remember.

I am shocked to discover how small and innocuous the labels are! Our warning labels look like this and this, and they cover at least 25% of the package.

Yeah, it's the same in Australia (and cigarettes are $13 a pack, which would be enough to discourage me, that's for sure)

Wow, yes, I don't know how anyone can afford to smoke, much less a student. How are you finding the other pricing issues over there? Comparable to the US?

Hmmm...peruses Camel Lights box.

Surgeon General's Warning: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema and May Complicate Pregnancy

To the best of my knowledge this is a pretty standardised message that appears on all cigarette packs, cartons and promo material (Camel bucks, for ince), regardless of brand.

Also, Phoenix, Vegas, Palm Springs and the like are usually comparatively warm and arid during the winter months, but downright chilly at night. Hope that helps a little?

Heh, you just so happen to have a box of Camels handy, huh? ;-)

And thanks for the notes about Phoenix et. all. Is Phoenix further north than Tucson? I could, of course, actually check out a frickin' map, but then I'd miss out on all the fun of posting dumb questions to my LJ!

Phoenix is lower and thus warmer. Around here, elevation counts for more than latitude.

You strange southwesterners! What's this business about latitude vs. elevation? Witchcraft, I say!

I haven't looked closely, really, but this seems to be fairly accurate (scroll down to the US part).

Brynn, this is the weirdest experience ever. Your labels are exactly the opposite of ours. Yikes!

For the first question, try this. There are four different warnings; you can see the text for all of them here.

Yowza. I had no idea the differences in cigarette packaging were so pronounced. How did I not know this? Thanks for pointing out those links, Mal. I am shocked! Shocked, I say!
