Wow, CW--you really are going after the teen girl audience, aren't you?

So I was rewatching "Afterschool Special" tonight, mainly for Dean in gym shorts, and I saw a preview of that new vampire show on the CW that's going in Smallville's old timeslot: Vampire Diaries. And wow, does it look like a terrible Twilight ripoff, though a little googling informs me that it's actually based on a book series that predates ( Read more... )

I was a HUGE L.J. Smith fangirl in junior high and I was ridiculously excited when I heard they were making one of her series into a tv show. The Vampire Diaries would not have been my first, second, or third choice of her series to see adapted but as you said they're obviously trying to draw the Twilight fans. I'm sort of horrified by the actress they cast to play Elena--the female lead. I'm familiar with her "work" from Degrassi the Next Generation and she stands out as a bad actress on a show filled with fairly bad acting. Plus, Elena is supposed to be a blonde, beautiful mean girl queen bee types but they seem to have changed her to make her more like Bella from Twilight. I don't know I'm not holding out a lot of hope that the series is going to be any good, but if they use the canon at all the vampire brothers are pretty slashy so I'm hoping to at least some good stories come out of it. Wow, that's probably more than you ever wanted to know about my feelings on the show, sorry /o\

Like I said in the post, I might have read these a long time ago--there was a time I would read anything vampire-related--but if I did I unfortunately don't remember. But I hope for your sake they don't butcher the books too much.

I have to watch at least the first few episodes, because I'm a sucker for anything with vampires AND I know most of my friends will be watching, and I want to be able to talk about it. I don't expect to like it. I'll give it 3 episodes, but then I'm hoping I can quit.

Who knows? Maybe it'll be surprisingly good. That happens sometimes, right?

Yeah, many shows turn out to be much better than their advertising, or than their Pilot, which is why I usually try to watch at least 3 episodes before quitting (and I see we agree on how long to give it a chance!)

Well, there was a time when I would watch *anything* with vampires (before vampires became so popular). And yeah, it depends on the boredom factor with me, too.

Yeah, sure why not, I’ll give it a try. My those vampires are pretty aren’t they?

Personally, I've always thought Ian Somerhalder was kind of creepy looking, and Paul Wesley's face seems entirely made of forehead--but I do still tend to give vampire-related things at least one shot. It may become the next big slashy thing, too--you never know.

Aren't those pluses for vampires, though? ;) I watched the preview at work so had to have the sound off, and it looked totally dumb, but they've moved Ugly Betty to Fridays as well, so I will watch at least the pilot of slashy vampire brothers since it is right before SPN and why not just turn the TV on an hour earlier? I hope it is as dumb as it looks so that I can lulz without getting involved.

I used to love L.J Smith when I was a teenager, although the Vampire Diaries were never my favourite. Personally I'd have been way more excited for a series based on her Night World books

But I'll probably check out a couple of episodes of this at least, even if the trailer does make it look incredibly lame.

Yeah, you really can't tell from trailers--that's more about what the marketing people think people will like. I hope for your sake they don't butcher the books too badly.
