I wonder about the similarities between Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco... Could it be a "west-coast big city" phenomenon? I know there's the "Seattle freeze", but growing up in Seattle, this seems natural to me, and I probably do it too.
What exactly do you mean by "deeper connection"? I'd say I have a lot of friends I'm close to... but it took time to become that way. Many of those people started out as activity parters, etc-we didn't just jump into having a deeper connection. Of course, I've also met people who I've wanted to be better friends with who didn't respond in kind, so when this happens I typically just chalk it up to a personality clash and don't put any more effort into it.
Also, maybe where you meet people makes a difference... Certain places and activities probably tend to draw shallower types, perhaps?
