One of the privileges of being Port Royal’s pre-eminent citizen was that he was assured a seat in the front of the First Church. One of the consequences of this was sitting only yards away from his love as she married another man.

Even as the sermon was read, he burned to see that smile in her eyes directed at him, to be able to kiss her ruby-red lips and wake the next morning next to her. He shook with desire. His happiness - and his sanity - slipped his grasp with every passing second, for he could feel his hand move of its own volition toward the hilt of his sword, consumed with a fearful rage toward Turner.

He was doing this to make her happy, he reminded himself, even if it made him a widower before his own marriage.

She was beaming, so happy he could cry.

“If there be any who object to this union, speak now, or forever hold your peace.”

He couldn't give into this temptation. He could not raise his voice. He could not destroy this.

But, God, he knew he couldn't live without her. Could not. Should not. Would not.

No, he wouldn't.

No, he wouldn't release that scream, tearing through his vocal cords like a caged beast. No, he would not! He would not .. should not ... but could.

In the ringing silence, something snapped.

“I object!”

All stared at him - some expecting it, and others not. There was a terrible question in her eyes until he found his voice.

"I love this woman, Your Grace. More than life itself.”
