Yeah, there's the Mac thing which allows you to show all your windows and select one, but the basic premise of just having a stack of windows is the same, I'm basically trying to envision a system that breaks away from that entirely, wondering if it would be any better or not

The problem with a metadata approach is always going to be maintaining that metadata sufficiently. I cite MP3 ID3 tags as an example. :) Personally I quite like this idea when it comes to filesystems Advanced Filesystems Beyond Megacrap and of course a file browser would be built to adapt to the power of such a system.
Your file browser idea is interesting but I'm not sure it's terribly useful in a moving-around-more-efficiently kind of way but of course i can be convinced! :)
And I'm in love with Ion too much to like a 3D window manager. It's just the apps that are the problem.
