What a wonderful post; thank you! I am not a naturally sucessful gardener, but I can grow a lot more here in the bay area than I ever could in San Diego, and this will be very helpful to me.

I've noticed that since I've added a bird feeder to my garden, the slugs and snails have mostly disappeared. My guess is the birds come here knowing they will get food, then pick one of the pests up as a treat. We all win!
