The Good, The Fine, and The Ugly

The Good: I took a bee keeping class with my brother and H! It was awesome, and I am excited to help him keep bees, though I admit I want the beeswax more than the honey. Though I do also want to try making mead. Mostly, it seems an awesome skill to have, and everyone knows how I am about strange random skills, especially if they're Little House on ( Read more... )

This is a good idea.

Also I feel like I should suggest a priest again. Or at least some holy water and salt.

DIE WORMS DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is with you and horrifying insect experiences lately?!?!

The beekeeping thing sounds very awesome, however... but, man, with your horrifying insect story luck lately, I'm just not sure you want to go there. ;)

Believe me, we were joking about it. Thankfully, bees don't start up until March or April, at the earliest.

Seriously. She's venturing into territories that I WOULD NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS dream of going. Whether she's willing or no, I salute her bravery. I would scream like a little bitch and flee.

We' starting bees this spring too! I can't decide if it's the honey or that wax that will be more fun, but hopefully there will be plenty of both. We'll need to compare notes.

Yay! I want to hear all about your bee experiences.

Where are you planning on getting your bees? We got warned not to buy nucs from bigger companies, as a bunch of people who bought them from there last year got nucs that were diseased, and lost the hives and the equipment. It was suggested we try to catch a swarm if at all possible. Is there much of a bee keeping community out there?

Yay, bees!

Yikes...

If you haven't done it already put all of your food (and bird seed) into zip lock bags or other seal-able containers. That should prevent them from getting another foothold once you kill them. Also it wouldn't hurt to take a a look in the closets to make sure none have gotten into your clothing.

Oh, I assure you I am a step ahead on the food thing. I need to go buy a couple more large tupperware containers, but I spent a big chunk of yesterday throwing out large amounts of things, and sealing everything else up tight. Forever. Nothing will be open in my house again, even after the moths are gone. Oh my god, these things.

Thankfully (knock on wood), they seem fairly confined to the kitchen and dining room thus far, and not so much near the clothing. Which I will totally take as a favor at this point, because I have had it with icky worms. I am going to smell like lavender and cedar forever, but that's fine by me.

AAAAH! I have nothing useful to say, other than that I am so so sorry. I remember far too well the day two years ago when I came home from work and found my entire kitchen light fixture and ceiling encrusted with gigantic disgusting houseflies. My roommate and I never figured out where they came from. Fly '09, we call it. **shudder**

I hope you get rid of the yucky bastards ASAP!
