Something interesting I have noticed since beginning to cook vegan and making my own...well, everything practically (not tofu or tempeh, yet)...and shopping at the not-prissy/yuppy farmers market is that my grocery bills have gone way down ( Read more... )

If you're still in Mountain View...it's aways away. I'd go with a CSA box from these guys: High Ground Organics. I think there's one more round of veggies. They go (or went when I had a subscription) until early November, and they're very very reasonable.

I go to the Civic Center farmers market. Not at all fancy, and they go to 5 pm Sundays, but you want to get there early if you want anything worth taking home.

We're working in Palo Alto and Mountain View and commuting from Santa Clara, probably about to move to one of {Palo Alto,Mountain View,San Mateo,San Jose}. Sadly, the city doesn't seem to be in the cards: apartments that don't make me want to gouge my eyes out seem to start in the $3000s there, which is out of our range. (Apparently Californians like to live in dark tiny holes with paper-thin walls? It's not what I would have expected.)

Yeah, the City is expensive - getting more so since I moved there about 2 years ago. Even old, old, old (and tiny) places like mine are damned price-y (although it was more "reasonable" when I moved in), and the new places are for millionaires. Thanks, "tech boom."

It's one reason the Bay Area has gotten so spread out - people don't really like to live like that, so they move further and further away looking for something "affordable".
