Hmm. I think my main question would be whether or not you have documentation showing your name change, as well as a copy of your marriage license, etc. If your name's changed on your bank and/or loan documents, things could get a little sticky there too. I'm assuming you're in-country at the moment, do you have access to one of the Home Office walk-in offices, or to a US Consulate for advice?

Also, do you know when you'll be getting your new passport with your changed name?

Congrats on your marriage! I was recently married too, but didn't change my name due to worries like what's happening with your visa--I'm married to an Englishman and venturing into purgatory for a residency visa soon.

If you have documentation of the name change, you should be fine just explaining it. My name is slightly different on my offer letter and passport, and I just put a note in when I did the visa application to the effect of "I have an extra middle name, it was added post-passport by living in a common law name change state, it's on all the school and bank stuff but not the passport, just ignore it.' Admittedly nobody cares about middle names really, but if they could follow all that successfully, you'd think they could manage 'I got married'. ;)

You've only got 4 weeks, I doubt you can get the passport changed AND the new visa in that time, but maybe?

Ah, thanks! If I can't get the passport quickly, I'm hoping this'll be okay. Especially because if I can't get the passport quickly, I'm going to be changing it anyway. So I might as well just carry around two passports and my marriage certificate constantly. Luckily, I don't plan on going out of the country anytime soon. :)

Are you married to a UK citizen? In which case.. is there any particular reason you're not applying for a spousal visa instead of a student visa?

I am married to a UK citizen, yes. And, yes, because we don't have the money for it. Neither of us have been able to get a job since we started looking in November and so can't meet the financial requirements of a spousal visa. Unfortunately.

Ah, right :) I was wondering if that was the reason or just lack of knowledge.

As for the visa: as long as you include a copy of your marriage license it SHOULD be fine but they will put the new visa in as your maiden name. Infact I'd ask the uni to send you the offer letter in your maiden name as they will only put in visas that match the name of your passport.
