Why I don't want to leave LJ, and rather fandom wouldn't either

Aug 04, 2007 19:04

1) While I've already opened a GJ a few months ago, I don't post there and very rarely check the friendslist. It has about 25% of the "friends" I have here on LJ, and none of the communities (because no equivalent communities exist). Moving would mean losing a lot of people.2) Even assuming that more people join GJ and not one of the other services ( Read more... )

You raise a lot of the concerns I have about moving elsewhere. I really don't want to go anywhere, either, but I know I'll follow the majority of my corner of fandom. Where the Snupiners end up, that's where I'll probably spend most of my time. That said, I'm not going to abandon my LJ, because for one thing I have a permanent account. I've already spent that money, three years ago, can't get that back. For another, I have a lot of non-fandom friends.

As far as LJseek, if you're using a Windows machine, LJArchive is searchable and a great way to find things in your own LJ.

But I will be cross-posting to GJ, IJ, and JF. Or at least every week or so using LJ-Sec to mirror those to my LJ.

er, i don't need to find things on LJ, if fandom moves to GJ or IJ or JF, i'll need to be able to find things there. or is that what you meant?

Oh! *L* I see. Nope, I just meant for your own LJ. Maybe I'm the only one who goes, "Darn it, when did I post about that?" ^_~

heh, no, i usually have my tags for that. my problem is with updating my master lists. every couple of months i do an ljseek search, which is typically more useful than a google search. neither catches things that were post flocked, but i don't list those anyway. imagine my horror at the recent flockage and all this talk about moving. *sigh* well, i can always just delete the master lists or just not update them any more.

Alas, i'm an icon whore, and that's the only reason i got a paid account. Yes, styling's lovely and so are mood themes but it's all about the icons. XD

I know the other blog sites give you more icons but they're interface is just not as sleek and updated as here. But yeah i'm not going as you already know and you definitely bring up valid points.

Sad to see that most likely the snupiners will be going and that's where I'm most active atm. I just don't think I can handle checking more than one flist either.

btw, your icon scares me. XD

well, you know, i haven't been able to read any snupin since DH :( i haven't read any fic at all between the 9th and the 24th of july, then i read DH and i needed a quick fix of snack medicine, then i started on this huge snarry epic, next thing i know i'm only reading ss/rb and ss/cw (for crack_broom recs), and... i looked at the new stuff over at lupin_snape, i'm just afraid to click. i can't believe she ruined my otp for me. maybe i just need time to recover...
as for the icon, i think it's perfect. c'mon, andy's harmless, unless you happen to be his caretaker. ever seen any little britain? i might still have their special somewhere.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who feels this way. I also have a feeling that LJ will buckle under the pressure of fandom ...but it would help if there were more fandoms screaming about it, too. Right now they're targeting HP fandom, because that's the one that's in the limelight, especially given that the new book was just released. However, how long is it before they start targeting other fandoms with "obscene" content? (Supernatural, for instance?) I'd be really upset to see all of my favorite artists and writers getting the boot just because SixApart pisses their pants every time someone mentions they might be held liable for user-posted content. *sigh*

i'm glad too, still an unpopular fandom opinion i'm afraid. i don't know if lj can afford to buckle, and in any case, it'll just happen again later. because the people who stir the shit aren't going away. and there's plenty in HP fandom to get stirred up about, including things that are inarguably of problematic nature (check out my squick city listings for a few giggleshudders). flocking that kinda stuff and/or posting it elsehwere and linking on lj would be the way to go, IMHO. i just don't see anyone and everyone moving together to the same place, we're not that organized and everybody has their own preferences. i know a lot of people who've opened new journals aren't going to leave LJ anyway, for various reasons. and i doubt barak b's crying into his pillow at the moment. although i do hope he's getting a good shagging with a dry radish.

I agree that a lot of what's being demanded is never going to happen. As a corporation, 6A needs to lay the line down somewhere and say, "No, we can't allow this sort of thing to be posted here." That's entirely understandable.

HOWEVER, they've handled this whole situation in an inappropriate fashion, IMO. They should have expressly stated in their TOS what they considered to be "obscene content," and they should have sent warnings prior to the permanent bannings. They thought they could quietly get rid of the people who were singled out by their critics and solve the problem, and they were wrong.

Anyway, I do hope it's all resolved soon. All this flightiness is making me itchy.

i agree with you 100% about the stupid way they've handled it, and 've made a comment in the most recent news post to that effect. i do get why they'd want to ban certain content, but even then, why do they have to suspend a user? it's their policies that are unclear to begin with. why not just ask for a post to be deleted or flocked or whatever, and only suspend on 2nd "offense"? also, i have seen one of the pieces, and while it personally squicked me, i don't think there was anything illegal about it. obscenity is in the eye of the beholder. i find pictures of sleazy celebs and their coochies to be obscene. but you don't see that get banned anywhere (*cough*ONTD*cough*).

You know, I'm not here for fandom really: I'm here for friends I've met all over the place. Some of them I've admittedly met through discussions of books or films or television, but I don't really consider myself fannish. And, I have a few language-related and other general or special content communities, plus I use LJ as one of my RSS aggregators (the other is the top bookmarks bar in Firefox. Any RSS readers to recommend?).

And, if you disappear completely I'm going to hunt you down through email. Just sayin'. But yes, I have a greatestjournal and an insanejournal but I don't use either. Of course, it's not as if I use LJ all that much...

embarrassingly, i got on LJ for the NSYNC media. but i stayed for other reasons :) hmm, i don't use RSS other than syndicated feeds on LJ, so i'm afraid i can't rec anything. as for disappearing, no way am i going to do that voluntarily. if i get "suspended", i'll post an update in my GJ. my email address should also still be good, as my YM account.

Yeah, ... Moving just sucks, but on the other hand the fanfic and fanart stuff can not go on like this on lj either. The porn just needs to go to archieves or whatever, which belong to fans. Information about these archives needs to be shared flocked. Oh damn, it does suck.

completely agree re archives, added that to the post. i do think only a very small percentage of artists need to worry, plus a smaller one of writers. basically if anything you write is slightly iffy, you can always just post it offsite and link on LJ, i doubt they'd suspend you for that. *sigh*
