i got bored last night and now i have a new layout. thanks to a couple of extremely generous anonymous people, i also have loads and loads of user pics!
so i thought i'd spam you with some + a stupid little meme.
I still don't know what I did on that icon. And I still have an icon I owe you, I just don't know when I'll get to it. I'm never on my own computer anymore and I'll be leaving soon to help my brother move. Blah. I'm behind on everything.
I've always had a ton of questions about your main icon. Since I don't watch TV anymore, and hardly any movies, I have no idea who it's a picture of. (Like, how much do our worlds *not* overlap?) When I was new to LJ, I thought you were a boy who had served in the U.S. Marines ("semper fi" being their slogan), and I always kind of wondered where you stood on military matters. Where did you ramble about it?
The other ones I associate most with you are "heh" and Snape/HBP.
ooh, i love questions, they signify interest :) well, it's a picture of morgan weisser, in his role as lt. nathan west in a deceased sci-fi show called "space: above and beyond". oddly enough, it was a show about space!marines, and 'semper fi' was still their moto even in 2030something or 2050something (senile). since i'm close to being obsessive-compulsive, i checked my tags and the original meme in which i explained some LJ stuff (including my default icon) is here. it's totally cute that you thought i was a boy, a soldier, and that hot. i hope i compensated in other ways ;) as for military matters, i think some guys in some uniform are uber-hot. on the deeper end, i think war is sometimes necessary and that it's a part of the human condition (i can't see a world without war). on the other hand, it's often redundant and used as a tool to serve the interests of the powerful and rich few.
I had a sheltered childhood in a university town, where my parents were major peace activists, and Gandhi was pretty much the family saint. When Carter reinstated the draft, I helped to lead draft counseling workshops on campus. There's no question that I would be a conscientious objector, had I ever been faced with that choice as a woman. And several of my friends did opt out of registering for the draft, even though it meant losing eligibility for any college financial aid. Even when I lived in Italy, the friends I fell in with were COs

I believe that the choice not to fight is not always the most morally justified one. I can elaborate if you're interested but I'll spare you for now :) Part of our differences on this have to do with differnces in the contexts we grew up in and/or think of war in. You're thinking Vietnam, I'm thinking WWII, our Independence war, etc. Speaking of WWII, have you read The Chairoteer? I think you'll be able to relate to a couple of the characters there.
...conflict between nations is a macrocosm of how we treat each other on a one-to-one level I have to disagree on this one. Some of the forces in action are similar (fight for limited resources, testosterone, etc.), but some things exist on a macro level that you don't have on an individual level (group dynamics, psychology of groups etc., and in a wider context, organization such as governments and corporations) and they play a critical role.
I *can* see a world without war, but it would probably also be a world without advertising and a lot of the other infrastructure that props up

erm...'member when you said "honesty is the best policy"?
'cause I liked the first layout you showed me much better...in fact, I really dislike this one...maybe its my advanced age, or the combination of age with bifocals, but I find a dark (geez louise - black!) background too difficult to read against...
sorry...
*hug*?
(and the text is black in the user pic text box, so unless you're rolling over one, its just a big black hole....)
