it's highly fictionalized, based on a friend who had a less serious ski accident and one of my brothers-in-law who had a motorcycle accident - they were both fortunate, my BIL incredibly so, I'm happy and still amazed to say.

I had a friend who broke his back in a skiing accident when we were in college. He got a little big for his britches too...
