Delurking with a question about baby gifts.

One of my best friends called and let me know today that she's pregnant. It's one of those practically-hit-over-the-head-with-a-frying-pan, what-do-you-mean-you-honestly-had-no-clue-you-were-this-pregnant?! types of things. I'm a fiber crafter, so I'm going to be crocheting an blanket for the baby. I only have 3 months to get it done, but I've ( Read more... )

I don't crochet, but I'm a novice knitter... I would think that working some runes or bind runes into the pattern of the blanked would be pretty easy. I think that would be simple and easy to do, and it could be done with a different pattern or with different colored yarn. I'd probably use Gifu and Wunjo for blessings, promoting generosity, good luck, success, helping with empathy, and promoting peace. You could add others as well.

Good luck with the project and I hope you'll post a picture of it when it's finished!

My covenmates and I made a special robe for our friend's baby. We red up on the meanings of various runes and ogham and developed some combinations that were attractive and meaningful. For example, you can make a astrix and put a different rune or a different ogham on each one (we kept the runes on a different part than the ogham). You can make a bind rune by combining several symbols.

All you really need is intent. You are working with the magic of fibers. You can weave, knit, knot, or crochet dang near any intent. Think about it: You turn a long piece of string into a blanket. That's pretty magical right there. Muttering a cantrip or humming an appropriate tune can help you focus your intent.

Bless the yarn before hand. Utilize the colors in that endeavor. Look up knot magic if your doing crochet and utilize that.

First of all, I love the word fiber-crafter, and never thought of a way like that to describe myself. I crochet and do cord and knot magic, and that is a great way to describe me- I crochet my own charm bags all the time.
Crocheting may be thought of as a series of arranged slip knots (since that is what many start with in a project), so I make the first or last nine stitches of my project a spell. Each of the nine is a "knot", and I use the nine knot incantation.
You could also coordinate the color of your hook with the meaning of your intent just like candle colors. You could do this with the yarn too, but it might not be practical with the design you wanted to make.
I also highly agree with what ianphanes said about intent; the fact that you are making this yourself in the first place makes it more powerful than anything you can buy. You can mutter a favorite lullaby you were sung when you were a child while you do it, summoning up your own childhood energy into the stitches.

Thanks! Just saying "crocheter" doesn't really describe me because, while I don't knit, I do embroider/cross stitch and spin my own yarns sometimes. :)

Thanks for the advice and the comments! :)
