For the picturebook age group, I would be interested in stories having to do with mythology -- for instance, I found a book recently that was all about various myths surrounding the god Thor, and it had some of the most beautiful illustrations I've ever seen. When I was young, I had a movie with simple animations -- more like the pages of a storybook turning than anything else -- which featured stories like the birth of Pegasus and Sedna. I want to see more care put into that sort of subject matter for that age group, but I'd be more concerned with the quality of the art, as that's what attracts me to those sorts of books first.
For the chapterbook and above group, I would favor stories with characters who were Pagan in some way, but where the focus of the book was not Paganism. "A day in the life of a miniature Dianic Wiccan" is not interesting. I want to see it integrated into a story where it inspires the actions of the characters, but is not the ultimately be-all-end-all.

What first got me into mythology were the D'Aulair's books of myths. They have pictures that in my opinion are stunning. The stories are told simply. I think it's a good inspiration. Good luck -- I'm trying NaNo this year, too. :)
Sure thing! :) You can friend me if you like -- I may add some things there to be sure I have facts straight and for general readership. I also plan to publish a few after the fact.
I'll have to friend you back, as my LJ is locked, but just let me know! And this goes for everyone here. :)
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! This is gonna be a blast.
