Karen - I am watching both Once Upon a Time and Grimm. I think that fairy tales are a cultural archetype, we learn them at such a young age and everyone in our culture knows them. That makes them very powerful. As an adult the one of the things I love about both shows is the re-imagining. Taking something we all know and putting that twist in. As an audience I think it makes us feel like we are in on it a bit. Like, when Belle want to Mr. Gold's - I knew they were going to tell the Beaty and the Beast story, that Mr Gold was the beast and they would fall in love. I had "inside knowledge" about the story they were going to tell. I felt proud to pick up little details like the china cup that broke (which I connected to the dancing teacup from my childhood story). Then, we they add the twist of not having a happily ever after (and in the real world her being locked up) it gives me a new story, something different to make me wonder how it will all end.

Once Upon a Time is currently my favorite show. I love the concept of Snow White as a rebel leader fighting the Evil Queen, and the Queen and Rumpelstiltskin make wonderful villains. The twist with Red Riding Hood was brilliant. And in the Beauty and the Beast episode, the Queen uttered my favorite quote of the series: "Of course, if he'd ever held you captive, I could never encourage a romance between you. That would send a terrible message!" I laughed out loud at that.

I haven't been able to get into Grimm. From the few episodes I've seen, it seems like a Supernatural rip-off. Although I did like the serial wolf-killing pig episode.
