My favorite literary version of Robin Hood is The Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle and my favorite film version is The Adventures of Robin Hood movie with Errol Flynn. Subsequently, I tend to like my portrayals of Robin Hood that display the characteristics shown in Pyle's writings and by Flynn's portrayal.

One surprising element I apparently need to enjoy a Robin Hood tale is for it to take place during the reign of Richard the Lion Heart. I tried to read Stephen Lawhead's novel Hood which sets the Robin Hood story back in the days of William the Conqueror and didn't like it mostly because of when they placed the story. The historical placing also does change the character around a bit. Placing tales druing the reign of Richard the Lionheart allows Robin to both be heroicly loyal to the crown while defying those in power at the same time while moving just makes him more of a bandit with aspirations.
