"I wish we had a Siberia so we could ship them all off to freeze to death and die and clean up the population."-New Hampshire State Senator Martin Harty, who is of course a member of the Republican Party, on how government could best serve, in his words, "the mentally ill, the retarded, people with physical disabilities and drug addictions-the ( Read more... )

as someone with a developmental disability these kinds of words chill me, but at the same time I laugh at the fact it's a 91 yer old senator who is talking about throwing away all the defective people.

Talk about pot/kettle.

Dude back in the day people like you were left to die too, so seriously shut the fuck up.

Yeah, people like that have higher standards for others than they do for themselves.

Earlier today, when reading about the pulling of the same-sex marriage bill in Maryland, I encountered a statement from a state assemblyman (who has been in his seat since 1985, so he's not a new wacko, he's an old one!) about how gay people are a cancer on our society. I was surprised at how physically sickened I was by the statement.

Sometimes, I forget that folks like that haven't yet disappeared.

Sometimes, I think they're growing in number. It frightens me.

Let me be plain. If we are alive we have a right to remain so until our natural deaths.

That seems like it should be obvious. But then, you could have an argument over what constitutes "natural" death. If the individual in question is entirely brain dead, like Terri Shiavo, should mechanical equipment be used to keep the body alive? Of course, in the case of living, functional human beings, yes, that is insane.

And I doubt a 90-year-old has any room to speak, especially since his comments reveal he's probably a bit "touched" himself.

If that's her choice, yes. If not, no. That's a bit trickier. There's no real good way to phrase what I was thinking. By natural death I meant "not caused by murder" or "not caused by withholding medical treatment which will most likely cure the person, such as cancer drugs." The best predicators of whether someone will survive cancer or not are a) health insurance; and b) wealth.

the mentally ill, the retarded, people with physical disabilities and drug addictions

These people all have a right to the same resources necessary to survival as anyone else.

That seems like it should be obvious.

Except to Republican state senators in New Hampshire.

I understand and agree with your point. I just wanted to explore it a little.

I know. "Natural death" is a problematic phrase. I was just trying to find a better way of saying it.

Sorry if it sounded like I thought you didn't agree.
