From what I've seen, it depends on what you're writing. I've seen plenty of male authors complain that it's tough to publish novels under their own names, "because only women read books". Charles Coleman Finlay published his most recent series under the name C.C. Finlay, I suspect in large part to leave his gender ambiguous (the series has a dual male/female lead, and so might appeal more to women).
