Answer: 1984, when Regan was re-elected.
I wasn't particularly shocked, there has been a republican presence within the state for some time, (I mean, former governer Mitt Romney ran for president on the Republican ticket) from what I saw when the parties got truly polarized was during the Bush administration, when there were fears that all republicans would take that party line, rather than that of thought and moderation.
I'd like to think that this serves as evidence that the voters in Massachusetts are more than capable of thoughtful examination when it comes to election of candidates, thinking past affiliation to honestly examine the content of the candidate's policies and positions.
Only time will tell how this will effect the passing of the health-care bill, only time will tell.
