Quote of the Week (I need a gun icon)

Sep 30, 2007 19:03

Out of the mouths of TV stars (and the writers that produce the lines):

"Lives were saved because i was armed. We all should be armed. Every citizen should have one strapped to his waist. Hell, the criminals all have them! The answer isn't less guns, it's MORE!" --Denny Crane (William Shatner)

I love it. Pretty much that's a perfect quote.

yeah, i need to. But i'd like Jimmy to take the pictures (cuz it would be hard ot hold a gun and take a picture by myself). Of course I would have it unloaded because i wouldn't want to "play around" (AT ALL) with a gun that's loaded.

Safety first!

I don't know if everyone needs one but I sure do like the idea of having a guy or two around. I understand why some people shouldn't have them. Convicted felons, people with mental illness, etc. shouldn't have them. That's why I support instant background checks for gun ownership. If Darren and I ever sell a gun, we have a number we call to make sure the buyer is ok to own.

I'm pretty sure (according to the quote) that "convicted felons" would be considered one of the "bad guys" that could have a gun. At least that's what I got from the quote. I agree about those who have been diagnosed as mentally unable to act responsibly. I don't have a problem with background checks in the slightest. It is against the law to sell to those who have these features, and thus without a background check those selling the guns cannot know if they are selling to those who are lawfully allowed to own a gun.

so... yeah... i agree.

Other than that being a awesome quotation; how the heck is the name William Shatner better than Denny Crane? lol

huh?!?!? Denny Crane is a fictional character on Boston Legal... William Shatner is the name of the actor that plays that character. Is that what you were asking!?!?! I'm confused...

Ohhhh . . . I know he plays a character in Boston Legal, but I don't watch the show. I thought he changed his name, like the billion other actors out there. :-p

Haha... no. He didn't change his name. William Shatner is pretty famous (especially from star trek), so i doubt he would change his name.

That makes more sense now, though...

Personally, I believe in Doberman protection. I've walked alone at night or early in the morning, and so long as I have Beri at my side, I fear nothing. Not only that, she's got the intelligence to discern if a stranger that is approaching is friendly or not. Just a few weeks back, a handicap guy was walking and stopped us to see if he could pet Beri. Beri had no issues with that and just chilled while we talked about her for about 20 minutes. But strange people who have no business around me... she'll let them know that she doesn't trust them.

I can't handle a gun to be honest... but telling my dog to bite a chuck out of a person, no problem.

I can see how that would be useful protection in many situations. However, my question would be: what about situations where you cannot have your dog with you?!?!? We have a mall around her (that we've visited frequently over the last several years) that has at least one car-jacking every weekend. It's not a good area (and we had SOME idea of this --but not to the extent of it). And a person wouldn't have a dog with them to and from the mall ( ... )

My other problem is that if you have someone approaching you WITH a gun all they need do is shoot your dog and you're "on your own" again against that person.

That's assuming they even notice there is a dog with you. I should dig up some stories from a book I have about Dobermans which has this one chapter written by a retired K9 cop who used a Doberman religiously.

As the guy tells his story, most of the gun-armed criminals took a crap in their pants because of the dog, and not the officer holding a gun at them. Most of the laments are like, "I don't care if you shoot me, but DON'T let that dog bite me!!!" It's amusing, but it goes to show how a well trained animal can really strike a lot of fear into some people.

But I agree with you about the other scenarios where you don't have a dog with you... what are you to do then? Although, this is why I wish people could bring dogs anywhere really, because you wouldn't loose the protective aspects of the dog. :)

I agree that a doberman does present an imposing force for a person. However, i'm sure there exist criminals that don't CARE about shooting a dog... and thus they would just shoot the dog and move on to dealing with you. But i do have to say that it's good that you take your dog a precaution. Usually the "bad guys" are looking for those who are completely without protection (the less "fuss" the better). Thus, for the majority of situations your dog would probably protect you.

I just would be concerned about that chance that the person could not CARE that you have a dog... or the times when your dog isn't with you. I hope and pray it never comes down to having to have "defensive force" for either of us, though.
