The real solution is international cooperation. The most effective way to combat illegal online activities such as dissemination of child pornography is to attack them at their source.

SOPA/PIPA would not have anything to do with the child pornography problem. SOPA/PIPA do not address that particular issue and deal only with copyright infringement and "pirating". so... I'm not sure what that has to do with it.

Regarding SOPA/PIPA and their use: I think it would be very easy for the federal government to abuse this power. Not only that but it would make many sites (including this one) highly liable for the content their users post. People currently post pictures of celebs they like and songs they enjoy... that would be an offense that could get the website blocked and removed from ALL USERS until it is dealt with. These are things that most people don't think about, nor consider "bad" or "illegal" and while that may be a mistake on the part of the user, I don't think this legislation would fix the main problem: piracy. People would get around it.. .and easily. Instead freedom of speech would be a possible fall-guy and piracy would continue.

Blocking child pornography is how they sold it to the Christian lobby. The law would enable blocking anything illegal. Likely followed by anything "objectionable", likely followed by anything "inconvenient". I am intimately familiar with the issue. Remember, it's what I do for a living.

Right, but SOPA (to my knowledge) has nothing to do with child porn. They can *already* shut down sites for child porn... SOPA is not necessary for that at all. It's possible they pushed that idea to the lobby groups but that's completely inaccurate -- if not downright lying.

The purpose of SOPA is solely for copyrighted materials and the ability to shut down websites that abuse that....

And yeah, it's what my husband does for a living too. I'm typically fairly well informed on subjects like these. ;)
