*shrugs* The people who'll be terrified by it would be terrified by anything even remotely occultish. Those who are interested in magical things will ignore it and come exploring anyway.

I think some people can't figure out the difference between paganism, witchcraft, the occult, and a cult[1] and that editor might be one such person. I also think some terms have more baggage than others and baggage can be an effective means of selling books, but that might just be the cynic in me talking.

[1] I'm presuming from the use of the term "programming" that a cult was involved, but I haven't read the book myself

I believe that anti-witchcraft propaganda such as this sort of thing is actually a positive indicator of the success and appeal of witchcraft and the occult to modern youth (who are tommorows adults). Between the success of "The Craft" (I know, I know) and HArry Potter, Christians have started to notice that their kids are simply bored of Christianity. Especially since youth are preoccupied with finding their own power in the world which books like Potter support, and modern Christianity denies ( ... )

Comfort yourself with the fact that by and large, this is merely backlash that is failing miserably.

Except that it's still going after all these years.
Jay's Journal was written in the 70's.

Once taught a truly messed up kid, and the administration blame it on her parents being "Satanists." One the other hand, a group I belonged to once had a social worker who specialized in kids review a book on Wiccan parenting and she said that is was one of the best parenting books she had ever read and was going to buy a copy to incorporate into her parenting classes.

The truth is that for Centuries non-Christians have been the fall guys for everything that is wrong with society in Christian based cultures. In reality, most pagan are pretty conservative people with pretty conservative jobs. And I laughingly say that they are so conservative that even Christianity seems to be a radical religion. The problem is early on Christians were persecuted and they have just included that paranoia into church dogma. It makes mean want to scream, "Oh just grow-up will ya!"

Ewewew! I had to read Go Ask Alice for one of my lit classes. If this has the same "quality" as that book, the best thing to do is laugh at it and move on.
