We all have a comfort zone we like to stay in and that's completely okay, but I think it's great you tried something different and even more importantly you had fun with this challenge. I tend to aim for a crazier style usually and even I still have trouble with what is good weird and ugly weird so don't be too concerned about that, you're making your icons for your enjoyment primarily and even if it falls flat to the icon community you still would have learnt something while making that icon. I pretty much dig all of them! You've definitely stepped way outside your comfort zone with these--and, tbh, I am a huge fan of your comfort zone--but they are still really in the 'great' pocket in my book. I love that you've gone with muddier, darker colors than you usually do, and I really admire the way you've played with textures that are outside of your comfort zone as well. It all works together really well.
I particularly love the ones where you've played with a fractured composition. 8 and 9 are both incredible in that respect, and I love the contrast in both. And 12 is my absolute favorite of the set. It is stunning on all levels!! 11 is fabulous too. The coloring is so deep and gorgeous. 19 is also perfect. The cropping is amazing, and I love the addition of the clock to really bring the whole thing together. Simple yet strange and effective.
I think with this theme it's so much more a question of taste than what you usually have for icon challenges. I commented on a couple of batches and everyone of them had at least one icon I absolutely adore, but others might not think so. That's the awesome thing about this challenge :)
The composition on this set is awesome, especially 8, 9 and 15 are amazing! The coloring of 11 and 14 is also very pretty.
Yeah there's so much variety possible in this challenge and probably something that works for everyone in each post. It was a lot of fun for me to make these and also fun to see what other people come up with.
