Well, I laugh, but I'm also rather proud of myself for being in the South and knowing what the hell a Mummer is. (For the record, we pass the mummers museum on our way out of Philadelphia, on our way home from the NJ pilgrimage.)
Well I'll say I'm impressed! It's always fun explaining them. "Weeeelll, it's a bunch of macho Italian and Irish dudes letting out their inner drag queen for a day and being totally comfortable doing so"
I like to add, "They wear giant peacock tails and play 'Oh Dem Golden Slippers' on ukuleles and banjos." Beat. "Yes, it's quite popular."
Actually, we've a transplant from PA down here, and he's organized a miniature contingent (what is the collective noun for mummers? a flock?) of mummers to march in the local Christmas parade.
The newspaper obliges with an explanation of what the hell's goin' on thar in the days before the parade for the confused Southerners (of which there are few, but there are non-Philadelphians aplenty who likewise wonder).
