Scenes From Fanfics Never Written

Oct 02, 2003 21:53

You know, going through collections of notes for fanfics you never got around to writing is like going through old clothes. You find a few that look really good but just wouldn't fit anymore, you find some that have faded with time and don't look as good as when you first had them, and you find some that still look surprisingly good despite the ( Read more... )

You seem to have this real talent for intelligently comical dialogue that I can do occasionally, but something that requires thought first. But there again, having read as much of your stuff as I have, I should have gathered that by now!

That's one thing that posting DtVS taught me, actually - that other people got my sense of humour. I'd been writing for years already by then, so I was fully confident of my ability to write, but it wasn't until I started getting feedback on my fanfic that I found out I was funny. (I live in my own warped little world over here. I remain quite surprised when the things I find amusing turn out to actually translate.)

The particularly good thing about your humour is that you can get it to fit with the show. Some people over hit the slapstick, or ignore it completely, and you need to find the balance - which you do really well.

I think it's mostly having the luck to have a natural style that happens to resemble Sorkin's. I tend to be quite dialogue-focused and do a lot of back and forth banter, so when I started off writing fic, I wrote for the Buffy fandom because it had that kind of banter. Then I shifted over to the West Wing because that leaned even more strongly on it. A happy meshing of style and fandom. :) I could never write, say, Lord of the Rings fic, because that kind of dense, description-heavy prose wouldn't suit me at all. Whereas some fic writers do that kind of thing beautifully.

Well, that wasn't very nice ... necessaryspace October 3 2003, 00:12:30 UTC
... to only give us a snippet of what could be DtVS, part four. That's like waving chocolate in front of me and ... well, not giving it to me is the worst scenario I can think of. I would say you waving chooclate in front of me and then eating it would be bad, but I'd have time to attack you for it.

The point here is that it was mean. Cruel. Inhumane. What would it take to get you to write more?

And you have wonderful banter. Funny banter. Any chance you can write the West Wing scripts from now on, since Sorkin left?

Hee. Time, I'm afraid. I'm deeply stuck into "Further to Fly", I have at least two other fics and an original novel on the go, and I'm told that apparently I'm supposed to be getting myself this thing called a "degree"...

Also, sometimes I eat and sleep. But not often.

Seriously, I do hope to revisit DtVS someday, but I'd rather not do a half-assed job, so it seemed best to leave the characters stuck in a fairly happy limbo at the end of part three until I've got time to come back and do it properly.

I really enjoyed reading these, especially the Oz snippet, which is still making me giggle - thank you for posting them.

Hee. Yes, Oz's head is a fun place to be.

Well, I was going through my files and I've got all these pieces of stories, and I know I'm not going to finish most of them, but I like the little pieces that I've got. So I figured I might as well post them as they are, if I'm not sure they're ever going to get any longer.

Ahh, damnit! Not nice to toss stuff like that out there and then say you don't mean to ever write it. :( I knew about the urge to destroy the world, but now I *really* want to read a completed version of 'Hell and High Water' and 'Scarlet Tide.

Heh. I live to torture my audience. It's fun!

"Scarlet Tide" may well actually happen. One day. I still like "Hell and High Water" too, but I'd have to rethink it all. The problem with most of these fics, actually, particularly the West Wing ones, is that they'd be seriously time-consuming projects to get stuck into, and that's why I never get around to them. My epic fic quotient is rather maxed out with "Further to Fly" looming over everything, and at least two other multi-part fics lurking in the wings.
