Kennedy didn't wake up early these days-- late-night patrols sort of precluded that, even if these days she was patrolling more to look out for curfew-breakers than for fanged types. She didn't really enjoy waking up, to be honest; there was always that moment where she wasn't quite awake yet and she had the vague feeling that everything was... slightly off, or something like that.
That was okay; technically it was always just sort of there, but a good five-shot mocha always chased the sensation away enough for her to not think about it. Said mocha attained, she headed into her office for the day and settled behind her desk with the window open as usual to keep an ear out for any punishable shenanigans that might be going on out there. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, idly checked the messages, and made her usual 'Everything's fine here, don't worry' call home. Not that Willow or anyone else had been able to make it over the causeway, but Kennedy was pretty sure they didn't need to try.
When she hung up the phone, she had a slightly pensive expression on her face.
And then the
music started up, fading in like she'd come in partway into the song:
Back then, when the factories all were open
And the rent was not so difficult to pay
You said you would stay with me forever
'til Superior swept both of us away
And that helicopter was green and grey
Like the sky that hangs over the lake
And I knew that you would fly one day for sure
'cause you were made for more
Ambition is what keeps you moving
When your heart wants to pull you back home
You gotta run when God makes you an offer
You gotta go if someone shows you how to go
But when I wake it takes a minute to remember
Why it's so quiet and still
Sometimes I can't tell one thing from the other
Your voice from the ringing of those bells
And that helicopter was green and grey
Like the sky that hangs over the lake
And I knew that you would fly one day for sure
'cause you were made for more
When I look into the eyes of the angels from this porch
It's like the world's upside down
And winter, it's not really what it should be
Nothing sticks to the ground...
She trailed off and shook her head. "Okay, that was new."
