So I understand that a significant amount of fictional work, especially speculative fiction, tends to be an allegory or social commentary

I think I know who you're talking about, or else we both know somebody who was bitching about this earlier and came upon it independently.
In any case, said person must have really hated Lethal Weapon 2, because the bad guys were white protestant men who were also crazy racists. And by that logic, I should also hate Burn Notice and half the movies made in the 1980s, because the bad guys are Hispanic/Latino of some persuasion or other. I watched the gameplay video to make sure that my initial response wasn't an overreaction, and the two things that I took away from it were first and foremost "CITY IN THE SKY ZOMG EEE" and secondly, "Anyone who would actually go so far as to build and live in a city in the sky filled with propaganda is really, really crazy." It's not so much a statement of "People now are crazy" as "Let's make a really crazy antagonist that you won't feel bad about shooting in the face." You know, like they do in most games.
No matter what you do, there is always someone out there who's going to bitch and boycott. Check out IMDB message boards for further proof. AS for the game, I don't even play video games and I SO wanna play this!!
The idea of you playing this game amuses me. I wana see that. But we just know you'll get Max to play it for you. ;)
I am really interested to! Steampunk aside, the main character actually has like... someone to talk to! A love interest/motivation, beyond wandering around. I know you don't know much about the prior Bioshock but in the last one, you were just kind of led around by the radio, watching an entire city crumble around you. This was kind of boring to me, where at this one, running after my apparently super powerful but still ironically kidnapped girlfriend seems like an amusing past time for me.
Plus do you see her poses before she gets snatched each time? Reply the trailers. SO melodramatic. She is totally playing up the 'oh no! The evil cyborg is about to steal me away!'
Okay that's probably not intention but I like to think it is.
