He knew he shouldn’t have. He was supposed to be working. And Claire had made him promise he would stay out of their way tonight. Though to be fair he had known Elle first and he hadn’t seen her in some time. It was because of him, technically, his daughter and his former partner had even become friends. For that he should be allowed to at least say hi to the girl. And so much the better if he could score some of that all too intoxicatingly tempting popcorn he had been smelling for the last ten minutes.

He mentally scolded himself the whole way down the hall for having skipped lunch. But then there he was knocking on Claire’s open door.

“Dad?” Claire asked, equal parts irritation and confusion in her voice as she looked to Noah in the doorway.

“Hey, Bennet,” Elle smiled as she changed to a perfectly postured seated position on Claire’s bed.

“Elle,” he smiled back. “I just wanted to make sure you two have everything you need.”

“Popcorn, movies, we’re good,” Claire nodded, trying to get her father to leave. It was bad enough he wouldn’t let her have the life she felt she deserved. Did he have to butt in on her time with one of her only actual friends too?

“Want some?” Elle asked as she lifted the large plastic bowl, seeing the man’s blue eyes almost glaze over at the sight of food.

“Thanks,” he sheepishly told her with a glance to his obviously irritated daughter. “I can’t stay though, I should get back to work and I’m sure you and Claire have Visas to wear out and clubs to sneak into and all that.”

“I maxed out one card!” Claire cried in protest, hating that he wouldn’t let her live it down. “And I paid you back.”

Noah laughed. “Sometimes I shudder to think what you two do all alone in here. The idea of receiving a gift basket from another credit card company doesn’t exactly thrill me.”

“Well then why not hang out with us and find out?” Elle chimed. “Unless you really have work that needs to be done. Really, Claire didn’t even say that you were here, just that you were working.”

So that was why she seemed so surprised to see him. She hadn’t known he was down the hall the whole time. “I shouldn’t. I promised Claire I’d let you two be.”

That explained why she hadn’t seen him sooner. Claire. Figured. She liked to pretend she was living on her own already. But all the while she had been hoping to catch at least a glimpse of him anyway. Now she wasn’t about to let him leave if she could help it. She had to think fast.

“Are you sure you don’t want to hang out? There’s a Stephen King miniseries marathon about to come up.” She knew he was a fan. And she was desperate. “There’ll be more popcorn in it for you if you do,” she added with a hopeful smile.

He looked to Claire then, who looked fed up to say the least. But then Elle was trying so hard. It would be rude to ignore her. “I guess I could use a break.”

“Great!” the older blonde beamed.

“But only for an hour,” he stated, “then I really should get back to work.”

Claire sighed. She wasn’t happy about it, not wanting to feel like a third wheel in her own bedroom. But Elle obviously wanted him to stay and while she couldn’t imagine why for the life of her, this was a man who had shot her in the past after all, she knew Elle would be sulking the whole time if she kicked her father out of her room.

Ten minutes passed and finally Elle made a slight move. Being seated beside Noah with Claire on the floor in front of them it was almost easy. Her simply resting her head on his shoulder might not have made many think twice, but Noah knew. Already he was mentally reliving their days of working together. All those times she would do this then, the things that would follow. Where they always stopped short. When it became too much. The nights he would come home and head straight into a cold shower. After a while he had sworn by them. He was beginning to remember why.

His daughter was in the room for crying out loud. And yet still it was taking every ounce of strength he had not to act on everything Elle seemed to want him to.

It wasn’t for another fifteen minutes that Elle even considered moving. It was when Claire had reached back for the popcorn that she had nearly leapt from the older man’s side. Claire hadn’t seen, but she had an idea something was off. Why else would Elle be red-faced and why else would her father seem even the slightest bit startled? At least she had an easy out to distract herself.

“We need more popcorn,” she stated as she stood.

“We’ll wait,” Elle told her, trying not to smile as she thought of finally having Noah to herself, even if only for five minutes.

“That was a pretty bold move,” he told her, unable to repress a smile to Elle once Claire had left the room.

“Not as bold as this one,” she breathed, moving in and pressing her lips hard to his.

Noah couldn’t think of how his daughter could walk in any moment, not when the intensity of her kiss, the liquid fire she was igniting in his veins, was blasting away the years between the last time she had kissed him all those years ago to keep from being noticed by their target of the day and now when there was no doubt that she meant it.

Elle couldn’t help but let out a soft moan when she felt him returning her efforts with equal passion. Why hadn’t they done this before?! It didn’t matter, she had him now and she was going to take all she could before she would have to pull away from him again.

Even Noah silently agreed that the time to part had come too soon when they heard Claire coming back up the stairs.

“Popcorn’s ready,” Claire smiled as she walked in, blissfully unaware of what had gone on in her room just a moment ago.

“Thanks, Clairebear,” Noah smiled before reaching for another few kernels. He stood another moment later, knowing if Elle tried something else he wouldn’t have it in him to completely refuse her. He had to stop this now before it got too much more out of hand. He had already kissed her and it was likely no secret now that he wanted more.

“Where are you going?” she asked him.

He glanced to Elle. “I should really get some more work done. Thanks for including me though, I needed the break. But now I really should go. Enjoy your night.”

With that he was heading back down the hall and Elle couldn’t help but blame herself. She had gone too far, she knew it. She had just blown any chance she had with the only man she wanted, it was all she could think.

“Thought he’d never leave,” Claire sighed.

“Yeah,” Elle agreed sadly. She hadn’t wanted him to leave, she had missed being so close to him. And he had seemed willing just moments ago. Had it really been because she had misread him or had it just been that he didn’t want Claire to know?

The questions plagued her even long after the soda had been drunk, the pizza they had ordered for dinner had been eaten and the movies had ended. Finally once she knew Claire was asleep she decided to get her answers.

“Elle?” Noah asked as he looked to the young woman just after having opened his door to her soft yet insistent knocking.

“Can we talk?” she asked him.

“It’s after midnight,” he protested momentarily. It was a weak excuse, he knew. He hadn’t even changed for bed yet.

“It’s not like we could have this conversation with Claire awake.”

He sighed. “Come in,” he told her as he opened the door for her. He was tired but he knew he couldn’t sleep if he tried. Not when images of his former partner wouldn’t leave him be and he couldn’t forget what he felt on the other side of that kiss. Not to mention that he knew how much further it would have gone had Claire not shown back up when she did.

“About earlier -”

“Elle, I can’t risk my relationship with Claire. It’s been hard enough since her mother left and even before that -”

“I’m not asking you to. I just thought we owed it to ourselves and each other to finish what we started.”

“What happened this afternoon -”

“You know that I’m talking about before that. I’ve wanted you for so long, Bennet. How is it possible you couldn’t tell even when we were working together?”

“Why me?” he heard himself ask.

“When I had no one else, no friends, no mother, a father who was more obsessed with his work, just endless days in The Company, I knew that I at least had you. That I still had you to consider a friend, if nothing else I knew you were the one I could trust.”

“Gratitude,” Noah sighed as he took hold of her wrists when she went to wrap her arms around his neck. Gently he lowered them back to her sides but he didn’t let go just yet.

“It’s not gratitude,” she insisted as she moved closer.

“You think you want me because it wasn’t until a few years ago that you were allowed to even be outside of The Company and around boys your own age.”

“You of all people should know I’ve never wanted boys my own age,” she almost laughed.

“Elle, I can’t. You know I can’t,” he stated as he finally released her and took a step back. Lord knew he wanted to, but it was wrong. Then again if it was so wrong then why was he having such a hard time telling her no? And why was it even harder for him to sound like he meant it?

“You can, if you want to. You might be Claire’s dad but you’re not married anymore. And how many Company Men can say they have a twenty-three-year-old former operative in their bedroom who wants nothing more than them?”

Without having to think, he answered, “Thompson had Candice.”

“Then I guess it’s your turn,” she smiled before leaning in and finally kissing him again.

When their clothes came off, neither exactly knew. But it had been unmistakable when they fell to his bed.

He had rolled them over only a moment after she had landed atop him. And she watched his ever move as he ventured down her body. He let her every moan and gasp be his guide as he kissed, suckled and nipped at her sweet skin. He should have known his lust for her was stronger than his willpower and while part of him wanted to kick himself for that, to force himself back into one of those cold showers, he only lazily kissed his way back up Elle’s flat stomach and upwards still over the valley between her perfect breasts.

At feeling his hard cock brush against her inner thigh, the slender blonde knew there was only so much more she could take before needing to feel him buried within her.

Noah smiled as he felt her pulling him back up for another deep kiss. She arched higher against him, her legs opening beneath him and already wrapping around his hips.

“Now,” she moaned as her eyes finally met his again.

“Are you sure?” He had to know.

“Don’t make me beg, Bennet,” she pleaded as she tightened her legs around him, her heels digging into the small of his back as she tried to will him to take her.

He entered her with a groan, taking her as slowly as he could. He didn’t want to hurt her, but it was obvious she wasn’t willing to wait.

Elle arched upwards again, moaning out as he sucked a supple nipple into his mouth.

To say Noah loved the feeling of Elle writhing and seemingly coming alive beneath his ministrations would be an understatement. Even every shock that slipped from her fingertips as her hands ran down his back or through his hair or pulling his head up for another kiss spurred him on. It hurt, but the pain was quickly fleeting and it only drove him closer.

Elle found herself desperately clinging to what control she had left. She wasn’t ready for this to be over, but soon she was clinging to Noah in every possible way and trying her hardest to focus her power inward.

Feeling him sheathing himself completely within her, his middle finger circling her tender clit as he pulled back only to slam into her again was quickly becoming too much. When she came it was with a sharp gasp and the bright blue bolts that danced along her skin illuminated the bedroom until her body began to calm.

For Noah, that was all he needed. Her core fluttering around him, refusing to let him go and the added vibrations from the low voltage electricity coming from just beneath her skin, he was gone. Following her within seconds, he came with a low groan as he momentarily stilled above her.

Elle moaned again as he thrust into her slowly again just a few more times before moving beside her. Noah couldn’t deny that his lover’s groan of protest that followed was as satisfying as having felt for himself the pleasure he had given her.

“Is it wrong that I don’t want to go back to Claire’s room just yet?” she asked as she turned to look at him.

He smiled over at her. “Not completely, no. But you know you’ll have to before she wakes up.”

“Still doesn’t mean I want to,” she sighed as she curled an arm around him and settled close.

Noah smoothed her sweat-dampened hair from her face and kissed her forehead. “I wish you could stay too.”

And she did, for as long as she could. Once she knew Noah had fallen asleep she gathered her clothes and slipped them back on. She was back in Claire’s room within moments and while part of her just wanted to sleep, she couldn’t help but savor the afterglow for just a little longer. Tonight had been her first with Noah and if ever she knew that it wouldn’t be the last, it was now.

The End
