iphone 3G - S (ucks)

Oh look - The iPhone got around to adding incredibly basic features like 'cut and paste' and MMS and all you have to do to get them is SPEND $300 MORE DOLLARS ON A NEW COMPLETELY NEW PHONE. Is it just me - or are these 'upgrades' pretty obviously software based and therefore should be incredibly easy to make available to all of your current ( Read more... )

Joe, are you sure can you get the cheapie price? It was my impression I would have to wait until I'm out of contract (a year from now) to get the subsidized price.

Factcheck here:

I'm not an Apple zombie. I'm probably more of an Apple skeptic.

However, the iPhone OS 3.0 update will give MMS capabilities to the iPhone 3G (but not the first-gen iPhone, some supposed chip limitation). The software update will give cut-and-pasted to all previous generation iPhones.

Last year's iPhones sold for $199 and $299 for 8 and 16GB versions. The price changes represent $100 price drops based on storage.

I'm more skeptical about features like voice command and video recording (and possibly Nike+ compatability), which seem to me like they could be more software based and have been held back to differentiate the new hardware.

My disclaimer: The iPhone 3G is the first Apple product that I've ever owned.

I am actually relieved to hear that they are rolling those features out to existing customers, because I was thinking that's a pretty crappy way to treat your most loyal customers - trying to get them to buy a whole new phone just to have some really basic functionality.

hopefully your blind hatred while writing this post has subsided because a lot of stuff here is factually incorrect.

Is the phone expensive? Hell yeah it is. However I've never regretted spending the money for it for even a second since I bought it. All other phones I have owned have NEVER EVER been as useful, adaptive, easy to use, and worth their price, except the iphone.

Will I upgrade? Not yet. I will just update to 3.0 and get MMS and cut and paste (for Free) and all the other software bonuses.

I have to say that I had a pocket PC and a Razr and all sorts of other (hot) shit phones and none of them ever worked as well as the iPhone, just in simple things like connecting to your own network. In fact the crappy 8152 pocket PC spent more time searching for things than it did being useful. The iPhone was my first Apple product but it ended up not being my last. I love it. It offers a level of integration that is far beyond anything I've ever used... like when people were sitting down they were all, "And if someone sends a phone number or a URL, we should make the phone dial that number, or open the browser for that, if they touch it". Well, DUH! But they seemed like the first interface group to 'get it'.

The now $99 3G phone was always $199 since introduction in July. If you are referring to the original iPhone, that was under a data contract price that was $240 less over the two year period. However you play it, Apple is getting (and will continue to get) at minimum $700 per phone for their highest tier phone.

MMS and cut & paste? I will look forward to having those features on my old 3G phone soon. (Though MMS is pretty archaic and will only provide compatibility to those with limited phones that can't email a picture or video, the preferred method. I really won't want anyone to send me an MMS nor a FAX for that matter, if they have a choice.)
