A day late and a dollar short...

I wish I could post a link to an online version, but unfortunately, not everything that's in the paper makes it to the virtual version. Anyway - I'm attaching two photos of a story from the Buffalo News - apologies for not knowing how to upload it any better or differently.

They're doing a weekly series honoring veterans, and last week they ( Read more... )

Indeed, he did! My folks enjoyed talking with him. As a bonus, they Sent Bill Wippert to take the photo; he saw a picture of my husband and said, "Hey, that looks like Dick Shaner, how do you know him?"

"He married my daughter!" Dad replied. So he stayed and ate some of the apple crisp my mom baked for the occasion, and they were pleased as punch with the whole thing.

That's a great article about your Dad. I'm glad he was able to tell part of his story. What he said at the end, though - that stings. I also wish more of his comrades had lived to be appreciated.

Congrats on the presentation final! I think I might have missed what that was all about... although some sort of vague memory is trying hard to break through, it's not happening. :-/ Please write about it if you have time, and especially if you win!

It was the culmination of a year-long process - a program run by the University of Buffalo's School of Management:

http://mgt.buffalo.edu/entrepreneurship/mwee

You have to apply and be accepted. You get assigned two mentors, attend monthly classes plus mentor meetings, and ultimately create a power point presentation about your business from a template they give you. Ours ended up being 31 slides long and included some before and after photos.

Our class started out with 27 members. By the end, it was down to 18; we all presented before two judges, and then six made it to the finals.

You have 10 minutes to present your power point, then ten minutes of q & a. Very grueling. The second round, there's an additional 40 minutes of feedback from the panel of judges.

Fantastic. Good job on sticking with it and getting through to the finals. Looks like a good program.

It's nice that an article was written honoring your dad and that he got an award.

Congratulations on getting selected, hope you win!

At 89, my dad is still very sharp mentally, and still getting around on his own, physically. It's hard to imagine that he won't be here forever.

Wow, great article. Can you imagine the daily terror of living behind the lines like that; amazing things were asked of people of that generation, and they came through.

Thanks, joebanks. I really can't imagine all that he saw, and especially all that he did. He's a very "passive" person by nature; I'm sure he's never touched a gun since the day he left the service.

Echo what joebanks said... we asked so much.

I'm not surprised that at heart your Dad is a passive gentle soul - my grandfather spent all his post service years painting. It must be difficult to find a way to balance that residual emotion from years of such intense service. I worry for our newest Veterans too.

You are fabulous going on to the finals... :)
