I know I'm repeating myself, but I do so love these. They're both really moving but Archie's one is something special. As I said in my Belmanoir rec, first person Archie is surprisingly rare and these sonnets are a beautiful way to give him a voice. Thank you again.

Thank you - there is likely to be more from Archie yet on the sonnet front I suspect = though I am wary of writing fourth -rate Donne- but we will wait and see.
this icon wrenches at the heart ,lovely though he - as always - is.

I think you're so right about Donne being the way to go with Archie but I can fully appreciate your reticence to launch into the metaphysical. Not something to undertake lightly.

And that gaze is exactly what I was trying to give voice to ! Brilliant:)

An old friend I knew in Cambridge years ago has recently been in touch -he is a Donne scholar from the USA and is one of the team on the Donne variorum edition.
Not to be entered upon or thought of lightly indeed -!
Maybe I have to have Archie reading Donne first - his captain might well have a copy - adventurer ,courtier, and man of sometimes tormented but determined faith - I suspect Edward might have him on his bookshelf!

but not yet - want to work on my Welsh episode next.
